Grab your climbing ropes, load the kayak, and don’t forget your map and compass - because Subaru has revealed its adventure-ready new Crosstrek SUV.
If the Crosstrek already looks familiar, that’d be down to the fact that it’s an updated version of the outgoing Subaru ‘XV’.
The basic ingredients remain the same; you get a go-anywhere, all-wheel drive SUV-hatchback crossover that’s pitched squarely at lease customers who love the great outdoors and want to stray far from the beaten path.
There’s plastic cladding to protect the wheel arches, roof rails fitted as standard, 220mm of ground clearance, and a dedicated ‘X-MODE’ system that turns you into a 4x4 genius at the touch of a button.
And with a 11.6-inch multimedia touchscreen and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, there are creature comforts to go with the Crosstrek’s no-nonsense attitude.
Subaru says the Crosstrek has a more ‘broad-shouldered’, aggressive stance than the XV it replaces, as well as a more ‘sculptural body’. Tweaks to the aerodynamics also give the Crosstrek more assured handling and stability, while the cabin has been enhanced with things like more supportive seating and noise-deadening materials.
Subaru’s robust ‘Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive’ system is fitted as standard, while the ‘X-MODE’ with Hill Descent Control means the Crosstrek will handle all sorts of terrains.
Under the Crosstrek’s bonnet is a 2.0-litre ‘e-BOXER’ petrol engine that produces power of 136 PS, 182 Nm of torque, and which is supported by mild-hybrid tech. You can expect a fairly mild 0-62mph acceleration time of 10.8 seconds and a top speed of 123 mph.
That powertrain comes mated to an advanced automatic ‘Continuously Variable Transmission’, or ‘CVT’ gearbox which works hard to provide a smooth and quiet ride.
There are two trim levels available - the entry-level ‘Limited’ and the range-topping ‘Touring’.
The Limited grade gives you 17-inch alloys, heated front seats, and advanced safety tech like adaptive cruise control and autonomous emergency steering.
Meanwhile the Touring models unlock larger 18-inch rims, a more advanced ‘X-MODE’ system, paddle shifts to control the CVT gearbox, and a sliding and tilting sunroof.
When it comes to drawing comparisons with other cars, the Crosstrek almost sits in a class of its own. But if you’re looking at the likes of the Hyundai Kona or Ford Puma, and you want something a bit more ‘Bear Grylls’, then the Crosstrek is the one for you.
You can lease the Subaru Crosstrek with Select Car Leasing from £444 per month*.
