- Smart #5 revealed as new electric SUV
- Will rival Tesla Model Y as well as Skoda Enyaq and Hyundai Ioniq 5
- Largest vehicle in Smart’s history
- Could get power of up to 645 PS in ‘Brabus’ trim
The UK is about to welcome a new electric SUV in the form of the incoming Smart #5.
The rejuvenated Smart brand currently features two compact electric crossovers in the form of the streetwise Smart #1 and the sleek Smart #3 SUV-coupe.
Now a bigger, boxier Smart #5 is about to join the party - and it could be a genuine Tesla Model Y rival.
It’ll be the largest and most spacious Smart car we’ve ever seen as the manufacturer - owned by Mercedes-Benz and China’s Geely - expands its portfolio.
The exterior shape is squared-off and upright while Smart reckons the #5 will also have a ‘distinctive roofline’ and unexpected outdoor elements.
While we don’t yet know precise details about range and performance, it’ll likely enjoy a 100 kWh battery, a range in excess of 340 miles between charges, 800-volt architecture and super-rapid 250 kW charging speeds. That’s based on what Geely has been up to with one of its other brands, Polestar.
Interestingly, the Smart #5 has already been glimpsed in China, where officials revealed how range-topping, all-wheel drive ‘Brabus’ models could boast power of around 645 PS and a truly-blistering acceleration time. You can already also get Brabus editions of the Smart #1 and Smart #3, with each packing a whopping 428 PS, so a performance Smart #5 is likely, too.
We’ll get the full low-down when the Smart #5 is properly unveiled later this month.
