Break out the champers and chocolate cake - because the brilliant SEAT Ibiza is celebrating its 40th birthday.
Since its introduction back in 1984, the Ibiza hatchback has shifted more than 6 million units worldwide, becoming the Spanish brand’s best-selling model.
And now SEAT is launching a special Anniversary Limited Edition model to celebrate four decades of success.
The ‘Anniversary’ Ibiza gets an exclusive ‘Graphene Grey’ exterior paint job, unique 18-inch alloys, special ‘Anniversary Limited Edition’ logos, as well as a cabin replete with bucket seats and matte aluminium interior flourishes.
SEAT CEO Wayne Griffiths commented: “The success of the iconic Ibiza meant that some countries recognised the vehicle even before the brand!”
You can lease a SEAT Ibiza with Select Car Leasing from just £201 per month*.
And if you’re of a certain vintage, chances are you, or one of your mates, has already owned one.
The first-generation SEAT Ibiza was particularly interesting, being the first vehicle developed by the brand without the assistance of a technological partner.
It borrowed world-famous designer Giorgetto Giugiaro for the exterior - the same chap who created iconic cars like the Maserati Ghibli, DMC DeLorean, and the Volkswagen Golf Mk1 - while Karmann honed the interior and Porsche fettled the powertrain.
What’s to like about the current SEAT Ibiza? Firstly, it’s a fun, energetic car.
While it’s mechanically very similar to the VW Polo - with SEAT and VW falling under the larger Volkswagen Group umbrella - the Ibiza is a much more youthful prospect than the Polo, where you wouldn’t expect your nan to drive one.
Entry-level models get fairly decent power of 95 PS while returning around 50 miles to the gallon - perfect for younger motorists on tight budgets.
Meanwhile the sporty ‘FR’ cars add stiffer sports suspension, larger 17-inch alloys, and more aggressive exterior styling, so that you properly stand out in the supermarket car park.
