If you want to get your mitts on the new Renault 5 Turbo 3E, you’ll have to shell-out a cool £135,000.
The French manufacturer has this week confirmed the price tag for its extreme electric hot hatch as online reservations open.
Just 1,980 numbered examples will be built, with production models not expected to zoom their way to first owners until 2027.
That £135,000 ‘mini-supercar’ cost puts the Turbo 3E into the same price bracket as cars like the Lotus Emeya Sport, BMW X5 M, Audi RS e-tron GT, or Porsche Taycan Turbo. For a touch more dosh you could even get into an Aston Martin Vantage.
But Renault is banking on the retro cachet of the Turbo 3E - and it’s sure to become a sought-after collector’s item in the future.
In case you need a quick recap, the 5 Turbo 3E is an EV reboot of the classic Renault 5 ‘GT Turbo 2’ which wowed fans on launch back in 1983.
A 70 kWh battery channels 540 hp to the rear wheels while a colossal 4,800 Nm of torque enables the Turbo 3E to accelerate from 0-62 mph in 3.5 seconds.
Cutting edge 800-volt electric architecture supports 350 kW DC rapid charging which can take the battery from 15-80% in 15 minutes while you also get a range of up to 249 miles between charges.
Reserving a Renault 5 Turbo 3E is just the beginning, as customers are being urged to customise their rides.
A Renault spokesperson explains: “Alongside the historic colours of Renault 5 Turbo and Turbo 2, such as the Rouge Grenade of production models, or the black, yellow and white racing livery of the Renault 5 Turbo that won the 1982 Tour de Corse rally, customers will be able to choose from a range of new ‘gentleman driver’ options. They will have the opportunity to meet Renault designers in order to create their own exterior and interior livery, selecting the colours and materials for a wide range of features: seats, door panels, dashboard, etc. Allowing them to create a truly unique car.”
