- Renault 5 E-Tech named ‘Car of the Year’
- Takes main prize at TopGear.com Awards 2024
- Wins for Suzuki Swift and Dacia Duster
- Hyundai Santa Fe takes SUV silverware
The incoming Renault 5 E-Tech has been named ‘Car of the Year’ - before it has even launched properly!
Order bookers for the electric hatchback are due to open at the beginning of 2025, with prices beginning at a tempting £22,995.
And despite the fact that you can’t actually drive one yet, the 5 E-Tech has taken home the top gong at the annual TopGear.com Awards 2024.
Jack Rix, Editor of TopGear.com,: “To people over 50, the original 5 is a memory bathed in golden sunlight, but to anyone younger it probably means little. So the new Renault 5 had to be an attractive and appealing car in itself. And it is, both to look at and as a detailed and quality object. Like the first 5 in 1972, it marks a pivot from one world era to another, and Renault feels like a company revived. When a car has been made by people who love it, it shows.”
Renault, meanwhile, is confident the 5 E-Tech will be a ‘real game-changer’ in the EV market and a car that’ll ‘brighten up the UK’s roads’.
Fabrice Cambolive, CEO of Renault, said: “Top Gear is renowned worldwide and it is a great honour to accept this award from such a well-respected title.”
Available with a choice of two battery sizes and with a heat-pump as standard, the Renault 5 E-Tech offers a driving range of up to 248 miles and can recharge to 80% in only 30 minutes.

Elsewhere at the TopGear.com Awards 2024, there was a big win for the Dacia Duster, which took home the silverware for ‘All the car you'll ever need of the year’.
Top Gear editor Rix added: “There’s a humility to the Duster, but no sense you have to slum it. It remains fun to drive and to live with. It’s lightweight, but not cheap, with clever details everywhere. It’s relentlessly focused on being useful.”
Another affordable award-winner was the Suzuki Swift, which grabbed the ‘Small car of the Year’ prize.
Deputy Editor of Top Gear, Ollie Kew comments: “The new Swift is cheap to buy, cheap to run, fun to drive, unpretentious, comfortable, practical and likeable. Isn’t that all you could want from a small car?”
The particular Swift chosen for the gong was the range-topping ‘Ultra’ model, which you can lease with Select Car Leasing for around £200 a month* right now.
