- Official unveiling of the Renault 4 E-Tech
- Retro-futuristic reinvention of one of world's first hatchbacks
- Order books set to open early next
- UK specs and prices still to be announced
It’s back! Here’s the brand-new Renault 4 E-Tech, a reinvention of an iconic car that introduced the idea of a ‘hatchback’ to the world.
Back in the 1960s, Renault realised that motorists needed more practicality from their motors. The French firm looked at its outgoing 2CV and decided people need better interior space, a plusher ride, and a fifth ‘door’ at the back.
It’s why the Renault 4 is now considered one of the first mass-produced hatchbacks in history.
While the Renault 4 disappeared from forecourts in the early 1990s, it’s now making a glorious return here as a fully-electric ‘E-Tech’ crossover.
Renault calls it a ‘retro-futuristic reinvention’, and there are nods to the original in its wide and rectangular front grille, squared-off bonnet lines, sculpted doors and three-part lights at the rear.
Just like the first 4s, the new Renault 4 E-Tech will also be available with a folding canvas roof - which now opens at the touch of a button or via voice control.
Size-wise, the Renault 4 is slightly larger than the Renault 5 E-Tech, and shares 68% of its components with its hatchback sibling.
There’s a choice of two batteries. A 40 kWh battery delivers 120 hp and a 186-mile range between charges, while a larger 52 kWh unit provides 150 hp and up to 250 miles.
A heat pump comes as standard and there’s V2L (vehicle-to-load) and V2G (vehicle-to-grid) functionality. Using a 100 kW DC rapid charger you can replenish the battery from 15 to 80% in just 30 minutes.
Lease customers will get a decently-sized 420-litre boot, including a 35-litre underfloor area. The Renault 4 E-Tech also has more ground clearance than the traditionally-fuelled Renault Captur.
The cabin features dual horizontal screens and an infotainment system with Google services automatically built in.
The Renault 4 E-Tech 100% electric is planned to arrive in the UK in the middle of 2025, with specification and prices to be announced earlier in 2025.
Rivals to the Renault 4 E-Tech will include the Jeep Avenger, Kia EV3, Smart #1 and Peugeot E-2008.
