- New Carrera S joins Porsche 911 line-up
- Model sits between stripped-back Carrera T and Carrera GTS
- Power of 480 PS thanks to 3.0-litre engine
- Priced from £119,800
This is the new Porsche 911 Carrera S - and it’s the ‘most dynamic’ Carrera S that Stuttgart’s finest have ever produced.
But first, a model and trim level lesson.
The 911 is, of course, Porsche’s flagship sports car. It’s available in numerous different flavours, including the raucous, range-topping GT3 or iconic Targa, while the ‘Carrera’ represents your gateway to 911 enjoyment.
There are several different Carrera models, from the entry-level ‘Carrera’ to the all-wheel drive Carrera 4 GTS.
And this - the Carrera S - sits somewhere in the middle of the range between the stripped-back, lightweight Carrera T and the self-charging hybrid Carrera GTS T-Hybrid.
So, what’s new for the Carrera S - which is available as both a Coupe or soft-top Cabriolet?
There’s more power for starters, with a traditional 3.0-litre twin-turbo six-cylinder boxer engine now producing 480 PS - 30 PS more than before. That extra oomph comes courtesy of new turbochargers and optimised air cooling, among other things.
The Carrera S Coupe can also now accelerate from 0-62 mph in 3.3 seconds (just 0.3 seconds slower than the Carrera GTS) and on to a top speed of 191 mph, with a dual-clutch transmission (PDK) transmissions putting the power to the rear wheels.
You get 20-inch alloys at the front, 21-inchers at the rear, a sports exhaust system with tailpipes in silver, Porsche’s Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV+) system for better traction, and an uprated brake system.
If you’re leasing a Porsche 911, there’s a good choice you’ll want to personalise it with options.
To that effect, you can add Porsche’s Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) system, sports suspension with a 10mm lower ride height and rear wheel steering, or the Sport Chrono package, which brings, among other things, launch control for track days.
For the cabin, black leather upholstery comes as standard while optional folding rear seats (which comes as an alternative to the standard two-seater layout) attract no extra charge.
