- Aston Martin Vantage Roadster revealed
- Convertible variant of the Vantage Coupe
- Gets 665 PS and 202 mph top speed
- Expect it to cost north of £170,000
It’s a new modern British ‘masterpiece’ - it’s the Aston Martin Vantage Roadster.
Last year, Aston Martin launched an all-new version of its entry-level Vantage Coupe as a rival to the Porsche 911 Turbo.
And this, the Vantage Roadster, is the convertible cousin to the fully-roofed version, with Aston Martin Chief Creative Officer Marek Reichman hailing it a ‘sculptural masterpiece’ created as ‘both art and performance’.
If you find that waffle slightly pretentious, what you really need to know is that the Vantage Roadster loses nothing on the Coupe when it comes to power and performance.
Both cars get a 4.0-Litre V8 Twin-Turbo engine with power of 665 PS, 800 Nm of torque, and the ability to sprint from 0-62 mph in just 3.5 seconds. Top speed maxes out a whopping 202 mph.
The other stat you need to know about the Vantage Roadster is how fast the roof goes up and down - which could be crucial when it comes to avoiding a Great British downpour.
The good news here is that the a lightweight, ‘Z-fold’ roof can be fully opened or closed in just 6.8 seconds - which is rapid when you consider that the roof of the Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet takes around 12 seconds to retract.
The ground-breaking rag top also adds just 60 kg to the overall weight of the car - including the roof itself and all of the structural enhancements - which obviously aids performance.
The Vantage Roadster was designed in tandem with the Vantage Coupe, ‘allowing the team to implement features and attributes that result in zero compromises to performance, ride and handling and excessive additional weight’, says Aston Martin.
There’s an electronically controlled limited-slip differential at the rear wheels, a stiff yet lightweight aluminium structure, and composite body panels alongside a 49:51 front-to-rear weight distribution.
Bilstein DTX adaptive dampers (with a bespoke tune) give the Vantage Roadster ‘precision, balance, poise and, above all, the confidence that are the unmistakable hallmarks of the truly great high performance driver’s car’, Aston Martin tells us.
A sophisticated ESP (Electronic Stability Programme) system adapts and adjusts to suits the road conditions and to how you’re driving, while there are eight traction control settings that range from ‘Oh dear, it’s raining, I’d better go easy on the accelerator’ to ‘it’s a track day - time to unleash my inner hooligan’.
And then there’s how the Vantage Roadster looks, with its wide stance, signature Aston Martin grille, and silky-smooth lines. It’s hard not to be seduced.
Aston Martin’s Marek Reichman adds: “With the roof down, the soundscape becomes as dynamic as the design, blending simplicity, power, and a visceral connection that transcends driving into an unmatched sensory experience.”
If that all sounds like your idea of road trip heaven, you’ll have to find at least £170,000 to enjoy it, with customer deliveries earmarked for later in the year.
