This is the new and improved Peugeot 2008 - and it has been given an aggressive new face by its French designers.
Both the traditionally-fuelled 2008 and the all-electric e-2008 benefit from the refresh, which Peugeot says makes the SUV more ‘assertive’ than before.
And the other big news is that the electric e-2008 can now go further than ever on a single charge.
The outgoing e-2008 has a maximum range of around 214 miles between charges, but the new model will be able to travel for up to 252 miles thanks to a larger 54 kWh battery.
That’s a very decent leap in ability, and keeps the e-2008 hot on the heels of rivals like the Kia Niro EV, Volkswagen ID.3, and Vauxhall Mokka Electric.
There’s also a significant power boost for the e-2008, with the output jumping from 138 PS to 158 PS.
Design wise, Peugeot says the new 2008 and e-2008 reflects an attempt to push the vehicle into a more ‘upmarket’ field. The 2008 hopes, then, to rub shoulders with premium competitors like the Audi Q2 and the BMW X1.
There’s a new wider, more ferocious front and new light signatures at both ends.
All new 2008 models now come with a 10-inch central touchscreen as standard. Under the central screen, the piano keys allow quick access to key functions.
There’s also a new, more compact steering wheel that houses controls for the infotainment system, as well as voice control. On range-topping GT models, steering wheels also feature a new GT badge on the lower part of its rim.
Besides the electric e-2008, the regular 2008 is powered by a 1.2 litre engine with 132 PS. That unit remains the same as before.
But Peugeot has also now promised a hybrid powertrain for 2024.
It’ll be a 48 volt mild hybrid - which adds a boost of power when accelerating and works to lower CO2 emissions while supporting fuel economy. Peugeot reckons it’ll be able to operate ‘more than 50% of the time in electric mode’ during urban journeys.
A Peugeot spokesperson adds: “Launched at the end of 2019 and with nearly 700,000 units produced, the Peugeot 2008 has consistently been among the top three best-selling B-segment SUVs in Europe, topping the list in 2021. The success of this model is attributed particularly to the e-2008, which accounted for 17.4% of European 2008 sales in 2022.”
