New look for MINI John Cooper Works Countryman

MINI’s John Cooper Works Countryman has clearly been down the gym - as it has grown in size while gaining a muscular new look.

It’s going to be a big year for the Countryman, MINI’s largest car.

In the last couple of weeks we learned that a new electric Countryman will arrive in 2024, which is set to have power of up to 313 hp and a maximum range between charges of 287 miles.

But in the meantime, before the leccy Countryman pulls-in, MINI has thrown the sheets off this updated John Cooper Works performance variant.

As before, you can expect power of 300 hp and 400 Nm of torque, courtesy of a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, that equates to a 0-62 mph time of just 5.4 seconds. For comparison purposes, it means the petrol JCW Countryman will still be quicker than the incoming electric countryman, the latter of which takes 5.6 seconds to accelerate from 0-62 mph.

What’s new for the JCW Countryman is that it’s bigger than before and wears a sharper suit. The popular crossover has gained 6 cm in height and 13 cm in length, increasing passenger space.

You can also expect fresh MINI LED headlights and re-designed octagonal front grille in high-gloss black, as well as a newly designed three-colour JCW logo.

MINI’s ALL4 all-wheel drive system comes as standard, as does a high-performance braking system with red brake calipers, and a sound generator that pipes engine noise into the cabin for a more ‘emotional driving experience’.

What MINI calls ‘beefy performance’ is also to be enjoyed, courtesy of a ‘dual-drive exhaust turbocharger’ that ‘supercharges the engine’.

There’s a full suite of driver assistance and safety systems on board, including partially automated Level 2 driving skills that enable the JCW Countryman to detect gaps in the traffic necessary for changing lanes heading towards an exit, and to bring the vehicle to the optimum speed for the assisted lane change.

A MINI spokesperson adds: “For the first time, drivers in the MINI Countryman can take their hands off the steering wheel on highway-like routes at speeds of up to 60 km/h, provided they continue to keep a close eye on traffic and remain ready to intervene at any time.”

The cabin features eye-catching JCW sports seats, as well as a sliding rear bench of seats, a crisp OLED infotainment screen, and toggles to put the car into ‘go-kart mode’ for the sportiest driving experience.

You can lease a John Cooper Works MINI Countryman with Select Car Leasing from £513 per month*.
