Five-door MINI Cooper revealed

Want go-kart handling as well as space for the entire family? Take a look at the new five-door, petrol-powered MINI Cooper.

The elongated hatchback arrives just a few months after the three-door MINI Cooper was revealed and it’s sure to appeal to folks who love the brand but crave a roomier interior.

There’s a choice of two petrol engines offering either 156 hp or 204 hp and then there are three trim levels to go at - ‘Classic’, ‘Exclusive’ and ‘Sport’.

The only bad news is that the grown up five-door Cooper can’t be had in performance John Cooper Works trim, which is reserved for the three-door model.

When it comes to powertrains, the entry-level engine is called the MINI Cooper C. It’s a 1.5-litre unit capable of accelerating you from 0-62mph in 8.0 seconds.

The MINI Cooper S, meanwhile, is a larger 2.0-litre mill that’ll see you whipping from 0-62mph in 6.8 seconds.

MINI says the suspension on the Cooper has been set up to offer ‘dynamic performance and ‘a precise steering feel’ while preloaded anti-roll bar mounts on the axles ensure balanced handling.

There’s an increased tyre diameter - of 625 mm - compared with the old model which improves the driving dynamics further.

Style wise, the five-door Cooper gets exactly the same design as its three-door sibling, with a minimalist front end, LED headlights and flush-fitting tail lights.

Meanwhile the cabin is a joy to behold, with a distinctive circular infotainment screen and knitted materials extending across the dash and door panels.

The Classic trim offers a three-spoke steering wheel with a textile band at the six o'clock position as well as black or blue upholstery as standard across the seats, dashboard and door contrasts. The list of standard-issue kit also includes MINI’s automated ‘Parking Assistant’, a DAB radio and heated steering wheel.

The Exclusive grade adds sports seats and uprated cabin materials.

And the Sport level brings extra style flourishes, like red accents on the dashboard and door trims.

The combustion-engined, five-door MINI Cooper is priced from £24,050 with first deliveries expected to arrive this August. We’ll bring you lease prices as soon as they arrive.

As ever, rivals to the five-door MINI Cooper include the Audi A1, VW Polo, and Peugeot 208

It's also worth noting that while you can lease a three-door MINI Cooper Electric with a fully-electric powertrain, there's no word yet on battery power for the five-door model.
