Power boost for BMW M2

BMW’s M2 just got even more tempting, after the two-door performance coupe was handed extra power and an uprated chassis.

The M2 coupe might be the baby of BMW’s M cars but it’s also one of THE best-looking.

That large, horizontal BMW kidney grille and three-section split lower air intake is unmistakable and also unique to the entire M range.

This facelifted model, priced from £63,360 to buy outright, has been given an additional 20 hp, taking the overall output up to 480 hp.

The 0-62 mph acceleration has been cut by 0.1 of a second. The M2 with an automatic gearbox will now hit 62 mph from standing in 4.0 seconds while ticking the optional manual gearbox option sees that time increasing slightly to 4.2 seconds.

How does that compare with rivals?

Well, the Audi RS3 Saloon gets 400 hp and can reach 62 mph in 3.8 seconds while the Ford Mustang Dark Horse boasts 453 hp and takes slightly longer to make the same sprint at 4.3 seconds.

Overall with the BMW M2, there are nips and tucks all round that ensure it ‘raises the bar for driving pleasure’, according to BMW.

Underpinning the lot is a 3.0-litre straight-six engine. The manual gearbox unlocks 550 Nm of torque while the auto box unleashes 600 Nm.

BMW tells us that besides improvements to ‘raw power’, the upgraded engine also offers a stronger linear delivery of power, sustained into the higher reaches of the rev range, as well as more responsive acceleration.

Top speed maxes out at 155 mph (or 177 mph with the optional M Driver’s Package).

Plenty of M2 drivers will want to trackday their cars, and BMW says the engine has been built with that sort of fun in mind. It features an extremely rigid crankcase with a sleeve-free, closed-deck construction, a forged crankshaft with lightweight design, cylinder bores with a wire-arc sprayed iron coating and a 3D-printed core for the cylinder head.

Meanwhile there’s an ‘emotionally rich engine note’ to savour thanks to an M-specific exhaust system with electrically controlled flaps.

The look of the BMW M2 is pretty much unchanged from the outgoing model, but there are new paints to choose from and light-alloy wheels with a fresh design. As standard, you get 19-inch rims on the front and 20-inchers on the back.

The cabin now boasts a new flat-bottomed steering wheel while M Carbon bucket seats are available as an option. Lease customers can also expect a 12-inch information display and 14.9-inch control display as well as heated and ventilated seats.

Punch the ‘Setup’ button on the centre console and you’ll get access to the adaptive M suspension, M Servotronic steering, integrated braking system, and the M Traction Control function so you can dial it in according to your own personal preferences.

Standard equipment also includes a Harman Kardon sound system, wireless phone charging and a head-up display. And all BMW M2s come with safety tech like cruise control with brake function, lane departure warning, and parking sensors at the front and rear.

You can lease a BMW M2 with Select Car Leasing from £561 per month*.
