The sharp-suited new MG4 EV is now available to lease - and THIS is why you should be tempted to have one parked outside your home.
First thing’s first, let’s take a look at the price. You can lease an MG4 EV with Select from around £269 per month.
That makes it just about the cheapest family car to lease, full stop, proving more affordable than rivals like the Fiat 500 Electric, Kia Niro EV, Vauxhall Corsa-e Electric or the MG ZS EV.
And with a range of up to 281 miles, decent pace and a roomy interior, the MG4 EV should prove both easy on the wallet and easy to live with.
How big is the MG4 EV?
Probably bigger than you might imagine.
Looking at the MG4 EV’s dimensions, it’s very similar in size to the Volkswagen Golf, a car that has long been the benchmark for do-it-all family hatchbacks.
You get 363 litres of luggage space, which is just shy of what you get with a petrol-powered VW Golf.
Meanwhile MG says that because the MG4 EV has a thin battery and long wheelbase, there’s ‘plenty of headroom and generous amounts of legroom’. You’ll fit three adults in the back, no problems.
What trim levels are available?
There are three variants of the MG4 EV to choose from - ‘SE Standard Range’ - called ‘SE Long Range’ and ‘Trophy Long Range’.
The ‘SE Standard Range’ model makes use of a 51 kWh battery that unlocks a range of up to 218 miles. That’s a further distance than you’ll travel with the Fiat 500 Electric or the Mazda MX-30.
The mid-range ‘SE Long Range’ MG4 EV has a larger battery - 64 kWh - that brings lease customers a range of up to 281 miles. Want to know more about EV range? Take a look at our guide to how battery range is in the official and real-world.
Meanwhile the ‘Trophy Long Range’ model keeps the same 64 kWh battery as the SE Long Range but adds lots more bells and whistles, including a 360 degree parking camera, heated front seats and sat nav. Because of those creature comforts, the range of the Trophy drops off slightly, compared with the SE Long Range, to 270 miles.
What do I get for my monthly lease fee?
The good news here is that even entry-level models come generously specced as standard, which is a joy when you consider how affordable it is to begin with.
The SE Standard Range variants boast a 10.25 inch infotainment touchscreen and a 7 inch driver information display, as well as full phone connectivity.
Crucially, you also get - as standard - MG’s ‘Pilot’ driver assistance system, which includes adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, lane change assist, intelligent speed limit assist, and ‘Active Emergency Braking with Pedestrian and Bicycle Detection’, to name just a few of the features.
The range-topping ‘Trophy’ MG4 EV adds wireless phone charging, a two-tone roof, rear privacy glass, a twin aero rear spoiler, and a full leather interior.
How much power does the MG4 EV have?
The Standard Range model has power of 170 bhp while the Long Range and Trophy both have power of 203 bhp.
Perhaps surprisingly, though, it’s the Standard Range MG4 EV that’s the quickest off the line, accelerating from 0-62mph in 7.7 seconds compared with the 7.9 seconds time achieved by its siblings with a greater range.
That’s likely down to the extra weight caused by the bigger battery in the Trophy and Long Range.
Is the MG4 EV easy to charge?
Using a typical home charging cable, you’ll be able to replenish the SE Standard Range battery in around 9 hours.
The Standard Range battery is also capable of 117 kW DC fast charging which will take the energy from 10-80% in around 37 minutes.
With the Long Range battery, a Type 2 charger can manage speeds up to 11 kW AC, which will replenish the battery in under 7 hours.
Using a 150kW DC rapid charger, you’ll also take the Long Range battery from 10-80% in 34 mins. Choosing the right EV charger can be crucial to getting the most out of every charge, so make sure to consult our guide on how to pick you EV charger.
What are the MG4 EV’s biggest rivals?
Two cars already doing well in the MG4 EV’s stomping ground are the Volkswagen ID.3 and the Cupra Born. Both the Born and the ID.3 are, essentially, from the same stable, coming via the Volkswagen Group of manufacturers.
But while they share similar underpinnings, the Born boasts much more aggressive styling compared with the cute and cuddly ID.3.
The ID.3 has similar power to the MG4 EV and a range of up to 280 miles, depending on which battery you choose.
The Cupra Born, meanwhile, has a claimed range of up to 343 miles between charges when you plump for the ‘e-Boost’ model with a large 77 kWh battery.
The Cupra Born was also recently named ‘Best Family Electric Car’ at the What Car? Electric Car Awards 2022.
What does MG Motor UK say about the MG4 EV?
