It’s official - the incoming MG4 EV will be one of the cheapest electric vehicles to drive in the UK when it arrives later this year.
The MG4 EV was first unveiled back in July, with the British-Chinese firm saying its new hatchback was crucial to the ‘next phase of growth’ for the firm.
Underpinned by new ‘Modular Scalable Platform’, or ‘MSP’, architecture, the MG4 EV is pretty much the same size as the latest Volkswagen Golf.
In fact, the MG4 EV is ever so slightly longer and wider than the Golf, which means it should be perfect for families in need of practicality and space.
And, as the cost of living crisis continues to bite, there’s another really important thing you need to know about the MG4 EV - base models will cost just £25,995 when first released.
You’ll be lucky to find any new electric whatsoever priced so low, and you can also expect monthly leasing fees to be rock-bottom too.
To put that price into perspective, the base Fiat 500 Electric costs £29,435, while the cheapest Mazda MX-30 is £30,050 at the time of writing.
The base MG4 EV ‘SE Standard Range’ also has a range of up to 218 miles between charges, thanks to its 51kWh battery.
The bottom-rung MX-30, on the other hand, manages a range of just 124 miles while the Fiat 500 will travel 199 miles before you need to plug it in.
So, whichever way you look at it, the MG4 EV is already a winner and you can expect demand to be high.
There are two other trim levels above ‘SE Standard Range’ - called ‘SE Long Range’ and ‘Trophy Long Range’.
Those versions enjoy a larger 64 kWh battery which unlocks a greater range of up to 281 miles. That battery is also capable of charging up to 135kW, meaning a charge time of only 35 minutes from 10% - 80% using a 150kW DC rapid charger. The MG4 EV is also rammed full of equipment.
You get a 10.25 inch floating infotainment screen and a 7 inch driver display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.
Standard-fit kit includes automatic LED headlights and rear lights, rear parking sensors, 17 inch alloy wheels, adaptive cruise control, automatic climate control and the ‘MG Pilot’ driver assistance system, which includes everything from Intelligent Speed Limit Assist and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert.
Long Range SE models also include MG’s innovative Active Grille Shutter System (AGS), which improves the aerodynamics and can boost range by up to 10 per cent.
The range-topping MG4 EV Trophy, meanwhile, adds Blind Spot Detection, Lane Change Assist, sat nav, a 360 degree camera, wireless phone charging, a two-tone roof, rear privacy glass, a twin aero rear spoiler, and a full leather interior with heated front seats.
All in all, that’s an impressive package for a bargain car.
Guy Pigounakis, Commercial Director at MG Motor UK, said:
“Our first all-electric hatchback will offer unrivalled interior space and practicality, with a level of equipment usually expected from premium and performance EV manufacturers. We believe our new MG4 EV will be an enticing proposition for customers seeking an affordable electric car without compromise.”
Remember, if you are thinking about making the jump to an electric vehicle, the boffins over in our Select Electric division say it's crucial you switch to a 'dual-rate' electricity tariff, which gives you access to a cheaper 'off peak' rate. It means you can charge your car at night for a much lower cost than charging during the day.
