Roofless Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed racer gets F1 ‘Halo’

  • Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed revealed
  • Roadster has no windscreen or roof
  • Power by 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine
  • Price yet to be confirmed

Mercedes-AMG has showcased its uncompromising new PureSpeed roadster - windscreen and roof not included!

The PureSpeed is part of Mercedes-AMG’s new ‘Mythos’ series of cars and takes its inspiration from the 300 SLR racer that Stirling Moss and Denis Jenkinson drove to victory at the 1955 Mille Miglia, an infamous 1,000-mile race in Italy.

There’s no roof or windscreen. The PureSpeed instead features a ‘Halo’ structure to protect the cockpit, with that tech borrowed from Formula One.

Owners also get a couple of aerodynamically optimised helmets to keep the great British weather out of their face.

They’ll need those lids to prevent face stretch, too, with the PureSpeed accelerating from 0-62 mph in 3.6 seconds and then on to a top speed of 196 mph.

Performance comes via an AMG 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine developing 585 PS and 800 Nm of torque. It’s allied to ‘Speedshift’ MCT (Multi-Clutch Technology) 9G transmission and ‘4MATIC’ all-wheel drive’.

That raucous mill, and the fact you’re completely open to the elements, creates a ‘uniquely exciting driving experience’, says Mercedes-AMG with a massive heap of understatement.

The two-tone paint job is also unique, with red melting away to black the further you move towards the rear.

Michael Schiebe, CEO of Mercedes-AMG, said: “The Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed is the most direct way to experience performance and fun at the wheel. Thanks to the car’s radically open design with no roof or windscreen, nothing separates the driver and passenger from the elements, allowing them to fully appreciate the vehicle, the road and the landscape with all their senses. The striking design reinterprets elements of legendary racing cars and makes for a fascinating, timeless silhouette.”

The PureSpeed enjoys rear-wheel steering and lots of active-aero, including a rear spoiler which can adopt five different angles depending on how you’re driving.

Inside the cabin, there’s leather AMG Performance seats, a custom-made analogue clock, and swathes of carbon fibre.

And what about when you park up in the middle of a downpour? Does the PureSpeed then turn into a very expensive bathtub? Worry not - all owners get a stretchable protective weather cover as standard.

The Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed is strictly limited to just 250 models which will also cost north of the £198,000 you’d have to stump up for a Mercedes-AMG SL 63 S E Performance Ultimate.

As a first time customer to lease a car I have been extremely impressed with the whole experience. The staff at Select Leasing are excellent. They are so helpful and knowledgeable and kept me updated and informed all through the process. I would certainly recommend them if you are considering going down the route of 'leasing' your next vehicle.
