Mercedes-AMG ONE shatters its own Nürburgring record

  • Mercedes-AMG ONE is ‘fastest street-legal production vehicle’
  • Shatters its own Nürburgring lap time
  • First road car to beat the 6:30 minute mark
  • Road-legal plug-in hybrid costs £2.5m

The Mercedes-AMG ONE is officially the ‘fastest street-legal production vehicle’ - after it shattered its own Nürburgring-Nordschleife lap record.

The Mercedes-AMG ONE is an astonishing, stripped-back hybrid hypercar that began as an ambitious project back in 2017.

Borrowing an abundance of tech from the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One team, the ONE uses a relatively tiny but high-revving 1.6 petrol engine and four electric motors to create a staggering 1,063 hp.

It’s capable of hitting a capped top speed of 219 mph while acceleration from 0-62 mph goes by in 2.9 seconds.

The all-wheel drive ONE went into full production in 2022 with just 275 examples each commanding an estimated £2.5m asking price.

Around that time, Mercedes-AMG pointed the ONE at Germany’s infamous Nürburgring race circuit and asked its sophisticated torque vectoring system and active aero to work their magic. The ONE duly obliged, setting a new record for the track’s ‘fastest production car’ - a record that has been untouched for two years.

Well, until now.

That’s because the Mercedes-AMG ONE has obliterated its own high bar, setting a time of 6:29.090 minutes for the near 13-mile course.

That’s more than five seconds quicker than before. And it also means the Mercedes‑AMG ONE is the first road car to beat the magic mark of 6:30 minutes.

Maro Engel, Mercedes‑AMG brand ambassador and the man behind the wheel for the feat, said: “Two years ago, the conditions were not ideal, and some sections of the track were still a little damp. We knew we could do more, and we wanted to show that. Today we were able to demonstrate the maximum potential of the AMG ONE.”

Besides the F1 hybrid-drive system, the ONE also features motorsport tech like an electric turbocharger, carbon monocoque and carbon body, and a double-wishbone pushrod chassis - all of which are seldom seen in production cars.

That’s all well and good, but we know what you’re thinking - what’s it like on the school run or nipping to the shops?

Mercedes-AMG says that because it’s a plug-in hybrid it’s got a pure electric range of around 11 miles, which should be ample for any trip to Lidl.
