Premium manufacturer Lexus is about to dip its toe into the world of affordable performance, judging by its latest concept model, the LBX Morizo RR.
Lexus is, of course, no stranger to track-honed cars. The firm’s current line-up features the 5.0-litre engined LC and RC coupes, which get power of up to 464 bhp.
Those models, however, could never be described as ‘easy on the wallet’.
But this new offering - the LBX Morizo RR - could be a different proposition entirely, being based on the regular LBX suv-hatchback crossover hybrid, which you can lease with Select from just £340 per month*.
You can consider the LBX Morizo RR as a sibling car to the Toyota GR Yaris, the latter of which is also being updated this year.
Lexus is, of course, the luxury division of parent company Toyota. And both the Toyota GR Yaris and this LBX Morizo RR share a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine.
The difference, however, is that the LBX Morizo RR is packing power of 305 hp while the new GR Yaris - launching this summer - enjoys lesser power of 280 hp.
So, score one point to the Lexus.
Like the GR Yaris, the circuit-ready Lexus enjoys eight-speed automatic transmission and electronically controlled full-time all-wheel drive.
And it’s a car that’s ‘focused on driver engagement and rewards’, says Lexus.
The prototype has been created with direct input from Toyota Motor Corporation Chairman and Master Driver Akio Toyoda - also known as ‘Morizo’.
Morizo was also a driving force behind the Toyota GR Yaris and - judging by this YouTube clip - clearly knows his way around a steering wheel.
A Lexus spokesperson adds: “In keeping with the theme of the Lexus and Toyota Gazoo Racing presence at the exhibition, the concept has been customised with unique details. Morizo’s signature yellow colour features in the plated moulding of the unified spindle grille, the brake callipers and the seatbelts. The result is a car that embodies a sense of casual luxury and has the reassuring, rewarding quality of a trusted driving partner.”
Here’s hoping the Lexus LBX Morizo RR makes the leap from test track to UK road in the near future.
