It might not have a name yet, but this is the first ever fully-electric Jeep SUV - and it’s set for launch next year.
While the world’s motoring manufacturers have scrambled to launch fully-fledged EVs in recent years, Jeep has been playing its cards close to its chest.
We already have, of course, electrified powertrains in the Jeep range. In fact, there’s plenty to choose from. You’ve got the recently-revealed Grand Cherokee ‘4xe’ plug-in hybrid, which joined the 4xe versions of the smaller Renegade and Compass SUVs. You’ve also got mild-hybrid incarnations of the Renegade and Compass, too, which feature a smaller, self-charging battery to boost fuel economy and reduce CO2 emissions.
But, up until now, there hasn’t been a proper, bona fide petrol or diesel-free Jeep.
And so, in steps this new model, which is earmarked for an unleashing in 2023.
So far, we know very little about what the size of the battery is, what its range might be, or who it might go toe-to-toe with in the battle for electric SUV supremacy.
Heck, it doesn’t have a name yet - with that important detail still be teased.
But what we do know is that Carlos Tavares, the chief executive officer of Stellantis - the automotive group that counts Jeep, as well as the likes of Peugeot, Alfa Romeo and Fiat, as brands under its umbrella - says the new model helps Jeep to push-forward its ‘global initiatives toward the full electrification of its SUV portfolio’.
A spokesperson adds:
“This new fully electric Jeep vehicle will be launched early next year, expanding the brand reach and taking the next step to the achievement of Jeep brand’s vision of Zero Emission Freedom. More information on the Jeep BEV will be released in the coming months.”
Size wise, this new electric Jeep is expected to sit just below the Renegade, which could see it rivalling the likes of the Volvo XC40 Recharge and the Skoda Enyaq iV.
We’ll bring you more information as and when it arrives.
