BMW has announced major new updates for both the 2 Series Active Tourer and the more sporting 2 Series Coupe.
The Coupe is now longer, wider and more low-slung than before, while the Active Tourer has been ‘completely re-engineered for 2022’, according to the German firm.
So let’s start with that aforementioned MPV.
It’s now built on all-new architecture designed to accommodate both electrified drive systems and conventional engines - two petrol mills and one diesel unit.
There’s a new, second-generation 48V mild-hybrid powertrain that promises better efficiency, while BMW’s seven-speed Steptronic dual-clutch transmission is now fitted as standard in all model variants.
Lease customers also get a choice of Sport, Luxury and M Sport variants, as well as lots of individualisation options, which should mean you get the Active Tourer you really need.
Meanwhile the 2 Series Active Tourer also now gets the sophisticated ‘BMW Operating System 8’ tech, which was previously reserved for models much further up the range.
You get, among other things, a striking curved display and a whole heap of driver assistance systems as standard, including Automatic Speed Limit Assist, which also stops you getting too close to the rear bumper of the car in front, and Cruise Control with brake function.
When it comes to the engines, the 223i offers the most poke, with a 0-62mph sprint time of 7 seconds, while the 218d diesel gives you the best fuel economy at up to 59 mpg.
Meanwhile BMW says two new plug-in hybrid models will also be added to the range later this summer.
Prices for the 2 Series Active Tourer start at £30,265 on the road.
Turning our attention to the 2 Series Coupe, the facelift is less of an overhaul, and more of a nip and tuck to make sure this exceptionally good-looking model stays ahead of the curve and in front of the competition, which includes the Audi A3 Saloon.
With a near 50:50 weight distribution and BMW’s classic rear-wheel drive feel, handling should be a dream. The line-up also includes the blistering all-wheel drive BMW M240i xDrive Coupe, which has power of 374hp
And the real update here is to the goodies that come with the 2 Series as standard to boost the overall driving experience.
BWM’s eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission is fitted as standard in all BMW 2 Series Coupe models.
You also now get, as standard, front-collision warning, Lane Departure Warning with lane return, cruise control, parking sensors front and rear, and the ‘BMW Operating System 7’.
The BMW Head-Up Display is also available as an option in the 2 Series Coupe for the very first time, and which projects driving-related information directly into the driver’s field of vision on the windscreen.
Meanwhile the dimensions of the 2 Series Coupe have also changed.
The length and width of the car have grown - by 105mm and 64mm respectively - while the wheelbase is 51mm longer. The 2 Series Coupe is now lower than the previous version, by 28mm. All of these changes add up, says BMW, to give ‘excellent cornering dynamics’.
It’s more practical, too, coming with a 390 litre boot that’s 20 litres larger than its predecessor.
There’s a choice of engines available - two petrol and one diesel. The 220d diesel unit is particularly frugal, returning up to 60mpg, while the M240i xDrive is there to provide the thrills in the range. Acceleration of 0-62mph takes just 4.2 seconds, peak torque hits 500 Nm, and it’ll motor on to an electronically-limited top speed off 155 mph.
A BMW spokesperson adds:
“Striking looks, exceptional handling and classical rear-wheel drive will leave potential customers of the new BMW 2 Series Coupé in no doubt that this is a car to excite and inspire. The new generation of the two-door model incorporates the new BMW design language to highlight a fresh, youthful feel with meticulously engineered and perfectly balanced driving attributes.”
The 2 Series Coupe is priced from £34,980 on the road but could make for an appealing monthly lease price of just over £365*!
