Hardcore Hyundai RN24 is rally-spec ‘rolling lab’

  • Hyundai RN24 prototype revealed
  • Fully-electric rally car could signal future of performance EVs
  • Gets same 650 PS powertrain as Hyundai Ioniq 5 N
  • Rear fender acts as noisy ‘soundbox’

Behold the hardcore new Hyundai RN24 - the result of what happens when you fit the most powerful EV powertrain into the smallest possible package.

The RN24 is a rally-bred prototype, a car designed to spark discussions about the next generation of high-performance, fully-electric vehicles.

And it’s most certainly a conversation-starter, with an exposed roll cage looking like a sci-fi exoskeleton and power of 650 PS meaning the RN24 is capable of accelerating from 0-62 mph in just 3.4 seconds. It also looks like it has just been driven off the set of the latest Mad Max movie!

Straight line speed is just half the story.

Hyundai talks about a ‘meticulous focus on drivability and precision’ and while the RN24 shares the same powertrain as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N road car, a redesigned 84 kWh battery pack allows for a 340 mm shorter wheelbase.

Size wise, the RN24 is comparable with Hyundai’s i20 N Rally Hybrid World Rally Championship (WRC) competitor. And it also gets a WRC-style suspension setup with rally-spec dampers and high-rigidity subframes.

Hit the ‘Rally Mode’ button and torque is distributed to all four wheels for maximum hoonability. There’s also an e-Handbrake to help the RN24 get going sideways.

The RN24 is fitted with a spoiler from Hyundai Motorsport’s Touring Car Racing (TCR) models, which enhances aerodynamic performance while improving agility and stability.

Meanwhile there’s also an external high-output sound system, with two side speakers in addition to the set up you get with the Ioniq 5 N, while the rear fender acts as a raucous ‘soundbox’.

Joon Park, Vice President of N Brand Management Group, said: “RN24 exemplifies Hyundai N’s commitment to advancing electric motorsport technology by prioritising the driving experience rather than spec numbers. This Rolling Lab proves that there remains untapped potential for high-performance EVs and with new technologies ahead, there is much to look forward to.”
