Here’s the facelifted Hyundai Kona, fresh for 2023 - and it’s sporting a futuristic and friendly new face.
The Hyundai Kona, first launched in 2017, is one of the most versatile hatchback-SUV crossovers on the market right now, and does battle with close rival the Kia Niro.
There’s a variant to suit all needs - coming with either a traditional petrol engine with mild hybrid assistance, a frugal self-charging hybrid, or as the battery-powered Kona Electric.
There’s even a sporty ‘N’ model which delivers power of 283 PS and competes with the Ford Puma ST.
And what’s remarkable about this new version of the Kona is that it’s been designed as an electric vehicle FIRST and foremost, with the other variants sitting in the Kona Electric’s slipstream.
There are some pretty major design changes here, from the smooth, sculpted front end with its eye-catching light bar extending across the width of the bonnet, to a rear that’s less cluttered and fussy than the outgoing model.
The cabin is now ‘roomier’ and more ‘versatile’ than before, according to Hyundai, thanks to ‘upscaled’ dimensions and a larger interior living space.
The driver controls have been relocated around the steering wheel, which unlocks more space in the console area for things like cup holders.
Boot space has also been improved - up from 374 litres in the old model to 466 with this new version.
There’s an abundance of smart technology, from continuous over-the-air updates to the ability to unlock your car as you approach it based on your smart phone’s proximity.
A full suite of driver assistance and safety software is also up for grabs, including smart cruise control, ‘drowsiness and carlesseness’ detection, blind spot warning with automatic emergency braking, and ‘Highway Driving Assist 2’, the latter of which helps lease customers maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead and assists by overtaking slower vehicles.
Meanwhile there are also improvements to the range between charges for the Kona Electric.
Previously, there were two batteries to choose from - a 64kWh unit and an entry-level 39.2kWh battery powertrain.
The capacity of that entry-level battery has now increased to 48 kWh Battery, while the range between charges for the larger 64 kWh has also been improved slightly, going from a max of 300 miles to around 304 miles.
There’s no precise details on charging for the new Kona Electric just yet, but the current model supports fast charging at 100kW which can replenish the battery in around 47 minutes.
You can lease a Hyundai Kona with Select from around £281 per month*.
