Here’s a first look at the upcoming, all-electric MINI Countryman - with preparations for production ‘already in full swing’.
You can, of course, already enjoy a fully-electric MINI in the form of the MINI Electric hatchback and recently-launched Convertible.
And now MINI is giving its Countryman compact SUV a pure electric drivetrain as well.
For now, details about range and power are being held back. But MINI fans will be hoping the electric Countryman significantly improves on the MINI Electric hatchback’s range of up to 145 miles between charges.
MINI is part of the BMW group, and the electric MINI Countryman will roll off the same production line as the BMW 1 Series, BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé and BMW 2 Series Active Tourer.
Fingers crossed the battery-powered Countryman gets a similar range to the similarly-sized BMW iX1, which can travel up to 270 miles between energy top-ups.
A BMW spokesperson said:
“As the brand's largest model, the all-electric MINI Countryman leads the new MINI family into an era of locally emission-free electromobility. The transformation to an all-electric brand by 2030 begins with this model generation. Thanks to space-saving components such as the particularly flat high-voltage battery, which is also produced at the BMW Group Plant Leipzig, the MINI Countryman will offer additional space and even greater comfort in the future.”
You can expect the electric MINI Countryman to start appearing at the end of the year.
If you can’t wait until then, you can always lease the plug-in hybrid version of the MINI Countryman (below) - and there’s lots to recommend it!
It comes in performance-infused ‘Cooper S’ trim as standard and also boasts all-wheel drive.
The MINI Countryman plug-in hybrid is no slouch, boasting power of 220 PS, max torque of 385 Nm, and a 0-62 mph sprint speed of just 6.8 seconds.
Yet it’s also economical - returning up to 150 mpg and being able to travel close to 30 miles using electricity alone.
