- Hyundai unveils Insteroid concept car
- Based on the regular Inster EV
- Will debut at Seoul Mobility Show
- Gets Drift Mode, just like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N
It’s the Hyundai Inster on steroids - it’s the gaming-inspired new Insteroid!
The Inster is Hyundai’s mild-mannered urban EV, launched last year as a stylish four-seater with a range of up to 229 miles between charges.
The Insteroid takes that humble Inster and dials things up to 11.
It’s worth pointing out here that while the Insteroid was unveiled on April 1st, it’s no joke. Instead it’s a one-off concept car - a ‘dream car’, Hyundai tells us - which will be showcased at the Seoul Mobility Show later this month.
And, yeah, ‘Insteroid’ really is a mash-up of ‘Inster’ and ‘Steroid’, which Hyundai says is a name that reflects ‘its spirited nature and muscular look’.
The gamified design (quick sesh on the classic arcade game Asteroids, anyone?) sees the Insteroid featuring an extended, widened body, track-optimised wheels, and a prominent wing spoiler, diffuser and wheel arch air vents. It’s not dissimilar to the recently-unveiled Renault 5 Turbo 3E.
The stripped-down cabin gets bucket seats, a roll cage, and a special instrument cluster.
There’s even a ‘Drift Mode’ (as you get with the raucous Hyundai Ioniq 5 N) which promises ‘competitive thrills paired with light-hearted driving enjoyment’, Hyundai enthuses.
The Insteroid isn’t just for hoonigans, it’s also built with the eco-conscious in mind, as the interior showcases 3D knit fabric crafted from recycled yarns.
Simon Loasby, Senior Vice President and Head of Hyundai Design Center, said: “Insteroid is a celebration of pure fun – a journey where we explored new ways to ignite emotion and imagination in every detail.”
