- Inster features 120 kW DC rapid charging and Vehicle to Load tech
- Launches summer 2024 with a ‘Cross’ model to follow
Here’s Hyundai’s attempt to dominate the world of affordable, compact electric vehicles - the all-new Inster.
Manufacturers are falling over themselves to launch cut-price EVs right now. Just look at the Dacia Spring, Citroen e-C3 and the incoming VW ID.1.
Now Hyundai is following suit with the Inster, a cheeky, chunky SUV which will come with a 220-mile range and class-leading interior when it launches this summer.
It’s a car designed for the urban jungle, with Hyundai saying its pocket-sized proportions make it great for city driving or parking.
While it’s small, the Inster should be easy to live with, boasting a 351-litre boot when you choose a model with a sliding rear bench of seats. All of the seats in the Inster fold flat to create a unique bed. You could grab a sleeping bag and kip in it if you wanted to.
Meanwhile the Inster also features external and internal Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) tech, which lets you power electric devices using the car’s battery.
A 42 kWh battery comes as standard, while a 49 kWh Long Range unit is available as an option. You can expect modest power outputs of either 97 PS or 115 PS.
While the figures are still to be confirmed, Hyundai is aiming for a maximum range of up to 220 miles for the Long Range variant, while the standard Inster should be able to travel around 186 miles between trips to the plug.
Rapid 120 kW DC charging can take the energy in the battery from 10 to 80 per cent in around 30 minutes. A heat pump isn’t standard but is available with certain models.
A full suite of driver assistance and safety features is up for grabs, including lane keep assist, highway driving assist (underpinned by adaptive cruise control), and a surround view camera.
Meanwhile the Inster’s cabin can be equipped with 64-colour ambient lighting, a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen with sat nav, and wireless phone charging.
What’s more, an off-road-styled, outdoorsy Inster Cross will also join the line-up in the future.
