The Hyundai i30 N hot hatch just got even warmer - thanks to this new ‘Drive-N Limited Edition’ model.
The i30 N was built for ‘maximum driving fun’, according to Hyundai, and boasts a 2.0 litre petrol engine that produces power of 280 PS and can propel you from 0-62mph in just 5.9 seconds.
As an everyday-useable, affordable leasing smile-inducer, it’s right up there with the Ford Focus ST and the Volkswagen Golf GTI.
So how do you make that already fun package even more of a crowd pleaser? You create a moody new limited edition, that’s how.
The i30 N Drive-N Limited Edition features a distinctive exterior and interior, and it’s been created via feedback from so-called ‘N-thusiasts’ - ie, the community of petrolheads who love Hyundai’s N cars - and who’ve revealed what they really want to see in a limited-run model.
It’s available in two colours - ‘Phantom Black Pearl’ and the ‘Serenity White Pearl’.
The engine remains the same as in any i30 N - the 2.0 T-GDi unit that has peak torque of 392 Nm combined with Hyundai’s eight-speed, wet-type, dual-clutch transmission.
You get three N performance functions - ‘N Power Shift’, ‘N Grin Shift’, and ‘N Track Sense Shift’. By using the N Grin Shift (NGS) button, the car will get a ‘boost’ of additional 10 PS that lasts for 20 seconds, giving you maximum bang for your buck when you crave it most.
What’s new for the Drive-N i30 N is 19 inch alloys that come with a dark bronze matte finish, as well as black Hyundai badges, special decals on the side, front and rear, and two dedicated bronze ‘Drive-N’ badges on the side fenders.
A Hyundai spokesperson reveals:
“The badges on the i30 N Drive‑N Limited Edition also display the GPS coordinates of the home of the N models, the Hyundai Motor Europe Test Center at Nürburgring in Germany. Hyundai’s high-performance cars are developed, tested, and honed at the Nürburgring-Nordschleife since 2011.”
The cabin gets a unique numbered badge, while the steering wheel, gear lever, armrest and handbrake are finished in red-stitched Alcantara, as opposed to leather. There are also red accents throughout the interior, from the seat belts to the ‘N’ buttons on the dash.
The company spokesperson adds:
“Hyundai N’s brand slogan is ‘Never just drive’. This claim captures the mindset and spirit of N: Do more than simply drive. Enjoy every second of it. To ensure this, the high-performance engines found in Hyundai N models are tuned for great responsiveness and excellent power output. This display of power shows customers that driving is not just about reaching a destination – it can be exciting as well.”
Just 800 of these Drive-N Limited Edition i30s will be built.
But if you fail to secure one as a lease, worry not, because the regular i30 N is an absolute hoot as it is.
All i30 Ns come, as standard with, a 10.25 inch infotainment touchscreen, an active variable exhaust system so you can adjust the din you make, and an Electronic Limited Slip Differential (E-LSD) for optimum grip.
