Honda has updated its popular CR-V SUV - and for the first time ever you’ll be able to lease it as a plug-in hybrid.
The CR-V is a family-sized SUV with robust, chunky proportions and which has long gone head-to-head with the Kia Sportage.
The Sportage is already available as a plug-in hybrid, having stolen a march on its Honda rival last year.
But now the CR-V is joining the plugged-in party, with the ‘e:PHEV’ model arriving later this year.
Honda says the plug-in hybrid will offer ‘impressive acceleration, quick charge times and a highly competitive all-electric only range’ of 51 miles between charges.
That means, says Honda, that the plug-in CR-V ‘can complete the majority of daily trips on electric drive alone’. When it’s not too cold outside, you can also achieve a 100% charge of the battery in just 2.5 hours.
As before, the CR-V will also be available as a full, self-charging hybrid - the ‘e:HEV’.
Two electric motors and a lithium-ion battery combine with a traditional 2.0 litre petrol engine so you can shift between EV, hybrid, and engine drive modes whenever the driving scenario calls for it.
The e:HEV and e:PHEV versions of the CR-V also get different front grilles, so you can differentiate between the two.
Design wise, the updated CR-V gets a more ‘purposeful’ front and a new tail light design at the rear. Driver visibility has also been improved, with lower front corner points so you get a better view of what’s going on ahead of you.
The CR-V is wider, longer and taller than before, which means you get more interior space - an extra 16mm of legroom in the rear is welcome indeed, as is extra luggage capacity.
Meanwhile safety in the CR-V has been improved. You can now enjoy Honda’s ‘Sensing 360’ suite, which includes goodies like active lane change assist, adaptive cruise control, and a collision mitigation braking system.
Tom Gardner, Senior Vice President at Honda Motor Europe Ltd, says:
“The all-new CR-V builds upon everything the iconic model stands for – progressive design, a premium cabin, class-leading levels of safety, practicality and comfort, and efficient and responsive performance. This latest iteration is the ultimate SUV package, offering a unique, dynamic and premium product that perfectly suits the current demands of the European market.”
You can lease the current generation of the Honda CR-V with Select from £427 per month*.
The plug-in hybrid Kia Sportage, meanwhile, begins at £482 per month*.
