- New Ford Puma Gen-E revealed
- Fully-electric version of Ford’s smash-hit crossover
- Gets max 233-mile range
- Competitively priced from £29,995
This is the new Puma Gen-E - a fully electric version of Ford’s much-loved crossover and which arrives with a range of up to 233 miles between charges.
The Ford Puma is already available with a mild-hybrid powertrain but this the first time the capable family car has been properly electrified.
The cost to buy outright begins at £29,995 - which puts the Puma Gen-E roughly on a par with rivals like the Vauxhall Mokka Electric or Peugeot E-2008.
The Volvo EX30 is a shade more expensive to purchase than the Gen-E, despite entry-level models having a range of around 209 miles between charges, which the little Ford beats.
When it comes to looks, the electric Puma borrows some of its style from the Ford Mustang Mach-E, particularly that one-piece front grille where the blue oval sits.
Ford also describes it as possessing ‘big city energy’ while boasting how ‘electric just got loud’.
The Puma Gen-E loses little in the way of boot room compared with its combustion engine sibling. In fact, there’s more of it, with 574 litres in the boot thanks to a 'GigaBox' underfloor storage area. On top of that, you also get a 53-litre front trunk.
'Frozen White' is the no-cost paint option but it looks good here wearing 'Electric Yellow' - an £800 bolt-on.
At launch, the Ford Puma Gen-E is underpinned by a 54 kWh ‘Standard Range’ battery. It’s quick to replenish, with 100 kW DC rapid charging restoring the energy from 10-80% in just 23 minutes.
It’s also relatively powerful, with 168 PS and 290 Nm of torque driving the front wheels and enabling the Puma Gen-E to accelerate from 0-62 mph in just 8.0 seconds.
There are two trim levels - entry-level ‘Select’ and range-topping ‘Premium’.
The good news here is that it’s the base model that gets the optimum 233-mile range, while the Premium makes do with 226 miles.
A Ford Puma Gen-E lease at the Select grade brings you 17-inch alloys, rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera, wireless phone charging, and fabric seats.
The Premium level, meanwhile, adds extras like larger 18-inch rims, Matrix LED headlights, an uprated 12-inch landscape touchscreen display with Ford’s ‘SYNCH’ connectivity and sat nav, a B&O audio system, and a power lift tailgate.
