More ‘affordable’ Ford Mustang Mach-E in the works

We could be about to see a more affordable version of Ford’s all-electric Mustang Mach-E, thanks to the introduction of new battery tech.

Okay, strap yourselves in, because things are about to get technical.

At present the Mustang Mach-E, and lots of other EVs in Ford’s line-up, uses what’s known as a nickel cobalt manganese (NCM) lithium-ion battery.

Minerals like nickel, manganese, and cobalt aren’t just expensive, they also thrust you into a debate about how they’re sourced.

But there’s an alternative to NCM - namely lithium-ion batteries that use iron and phosphorous in their cathodes, and which are known as LFP batteries.

What are the pros and cons between NCM and LFP?

Well, LFP batteries are cheaper to produce and also potentially more ethically-sound, whereas you’ll eke a greater range between charges from a NCM battery.

Because they’ll tolerate more charges, LFP batteries also have a potentially longer life than an NCM unit.

Now Ford says it’ll make an LFP battery option available for the Mustang Mach-E, which it hopes will result in a more wallet-friendly model being available to lease customers.

A Ford spokesperson says:

“LFP batteries are very durable and tolerate more frequent and faster charging while using fewer high-demand, high-cost materials. This lower-cost battery, at scale, will help Ford contain or even further reduce EV prices for customers. These LFP batteries will power a variety of affordable, next-generation Ford EV passenger vehicles and trucks under development.”

And adds:

“LFP battery technology also helps reduce reliance on critical minerals such as nickel and cobalt, and is in line with Ford’s work to create an EV supply chain that upholds its commitments to sustainability and human rights.”
