Dacia is celebrating the ten year anniversary of its cars first being sold in Britain - as it promises to keep offering an ‘unrivalled blend of quality and value’.
Whichever way you look at it, the Dacia story is one that screams success.
When the Romanian-French firm - which is part of the Renault Group - arrived here in 2013, few would have predicted the manufacturer’s staying power.
The first Dacia registered in the UK was a Sandero hatchback, an event that had been trumpeted for months by then Top Gear host James May, who was a bit of a superfan.
And Dacia says it was lucky to ride the crest of a wave of optimism in Britain, as the Dacia arrives just as the nation emerged from a recession.
A Dacia spokesperson tells us:
“The UK’s new car buyers had a refreshed appetite. 2013 would see passenger vehicle registrations increase by nearly 11% to 2,264,737 cars – the highest level in five years – resulting in the UK being the only growing car market in Europe. The market was still cautious from the turbulent last few years, but Dacia gave consumers the perfect solution, offering ‘shockingly affordable’, well-built vehicles that provided everything drivers needed and nothing they didn’t.”
Since that point, a total of 240,010 Dacia vehicles have been sold in the UK.
The decade also brought a boat-load of industry awards, including several wins at the What Car? Car of the Year Awards, Auto Express New Car Awards and Auto Trader New Car Awards.
Last year alone saw Dacia achieving a 55% increase in sales, year on year, compared with 2021.
What’s also endearing about Dacia is that it’s not afraid to wear its ‘budget’ tag like a badge of honour, recently poking fun at a new BMW heated seat subscription service by giving away free hot water bottles to customers instead!
