New GTD is ‘most audacious Ford Mustang ever’

Ford has unleashed what it calls the ‘most audacious’ Mustang ever created - the road legal GTD.

With power of 800 hp, courtesy of a 5.2-liter V8 engine, and intimidating exterior styling, the Mustang GTD has been developed in parallel with the Mustang GT3 race car.

And it’s not just here to ‘take on the world’s best performance cars’, Ford says it has also been ‘engineered to go like hell’.

If you want one, you’ll have to dig deep into your pockets. Production is strictly limited and Ford has slapped a £238,000 ($300,000) price tag on it.

Jim Farley, Ford president and CEO, says: “Mustang GTD shatters every preconceived notion of a supercar. This is a new approach for us. We didn’t engineer a road car for the track, we created a race car for the road. Mustang GTD takes racing technology from our Mustang GT3 race car, wraps it in a carbon fibre Mustang body and unleashes it for the street.”

The Mustang GTD gets a full race body kit, enormous rear wing, huge tyres, and an advanced dual ride height, short-long arm front, and multi-link rear suspension.

Carbon ceramic brakes provide the stopping power while a rear-mounted 8-speed dual-clutch transaxle and lightweight carbon fibre driveshaft gives it a near 50/50 weight distribution.

The GTD is dripping with know-how gleaned from Le Mans, and Ford’s Jim Farley has even thrown down the gauntlet to other manufacturers. He boasts: “We’re comfortable putting everybody else on notice. I’ll take track time in a Mustang GTD against any other auto boss in their best road car.”

Ford is even targeting a sub-7-minute Nürburgring time - which would make it the fastest roadgoing Mustang ever released by the firm. At 800 hp, it’s also the highest horsepower street-legal Mustang ever developed by Ford.

Inside the cabin you can expect Recaro race seats as well as a 3D-printed titanium paddle shifters, rotary dial shifter and serial plate, all made from titanium parts gleaned from a retired Lockheed Martin F-22 fighter jet!

The rear seating area has been removed to reduce weight and provide cargo space, so good luck doing the school run in one.

Of course, the Mustang GTD is just a precursor to the main event - the launch of the new, regular Ford Mustang (below), which is due to arrive later this year.

In the meantime, you can lease the current Ford Mustang with Select Car Leasing from £703 per month*.

This is the 3rd occasion I have used Select Car Leasing (Kieran Foley) for a private lease car. The process is stress free and seamless. I can simply provide a budget, spec and lease period and within hours I get the right options to be able to make an informed decision. Kieran confidently talks through all the pros & not so many cons with the plan and to date he has been true to his word without overselling the car or experience. I would highly recommend Kieran and the team without hesitation for all your car leasing requirements.
