A drum roll, please, for the latest vehicle in Aston Martin’s next generation of sports cars - the open-top DB12 Volante.
Looks alright, doesn’t it?
The basic ingredients of this Volante model are essentially the same as the recently-revealed DB12 Coupe. You’re talking about the ‘elegance and engagement of open-top driving’ as well as the ‘ultra-luxury’ and ‘power’ offered by a bona fide ‘super tourer’, says Aston Martin.
Both the DB12 Coupe and this DB12 Volante share the same engine - a 4.0 litre, twin turbo V8 with power of 680 PS and 800 Nm of torque.
The Volante gets a 0-62 mph sprint time of 3.7 seconds, which is slower than the 3.5 second time the Coupe manages but can be explained by the extra weight added by the fabric folding roof.
Top speed maxes out at 202 mph, exactly the same as the DB12 Coupe.
And Aston Martin reckons its DB12 Volante is a ‘true driver’s car first and foremost’.
There’s a rigid bonded aluminium structure for optimum handling, while the Volante’s ‘global torsional stiffness’ has been boosted by 5% compared with the Coupe.
The Volante also uses the same shortened Final Drive Ratio as the DB12 Coupe, to maximise in-gear punch, and also gets the same Electronic Rear Differential for the perfect mix of agility when you want it and stability when you need it.
The DB12 Volante also gets intelligent adaptive dampers, 21-inch forged alloy wheels, and the option of carbon ceramic brakes.
When it comes to the roof, it’s an electrically-operated ‘K-fold’ fabric hood that achieves a stack height of just 260 mm to unlock a decent amount of luggage space, at 262 litres.
The roof operation takes 14 seconds to open and 16 seconds to close and can be used at speeds of up to 31 mph.
You can also choose from four different roof colours - the standard black, or red, blue, and black & silver.
Inside the cabin you expect a high-end Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system, a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen, and swathes of luxurious leather.
Aston Martin Chief Executive Officer, Amedeo Felisa, says: “For many of our customers, roof down driving is the greatest pleasure. Aston Martin Volantes have captured that emotion and expressed it in unique style for more than six decades. With the new DB12 Volante we have changed the rules, creating a car that intensifies those feelings by preserving all the purity and exceptional sporting capabilities of the DB12 Coupe. A rare and true sporting convertible in every respect, this is a car to challenge preconceptions and find a new generation of Volante customer”.
A rival to the sumptuous Ferrari Roma Spider, the Aston Martin DB12 Volante is expected to set you back around £200,000 to buy outright.
