Soft top Ferrari Roma Spider revealed

Talk about La Dolce Vita - this is a new soft top Spider version of Ferrari’s utterly breath-taking Roma.

The Roma, alongside the Portofino, might be one of the most ‘affordable’ cars in the Ferrari range but it’s also - in our eyes at least - one of the Italian firm’s most sumptuously-styled cars of recent years.

And now, if you’ve got deep pockets, you can enjoy this convertible Roma Spider, which even has two small seats in the back for occasional use, or to stow your luggage.

The basic ingredients of the Roma remain untouched.

You can expect a thunderous 3.9 litre twin-turbo V8 engine producing power of 620 PS, 760 Nm of torque, and a 0-62 mph sprint speed of just 3.4 seconds.

Yet the Roma Spider also adopts a traditional soft top rather than a folding hard top, and that’s unique.

Ferrari explains:

“This spider carries over the proportions, volumes and specifications of the Ferrari Roma’s hugely successful V8 2+ concept, but what makes it so striking is the adoption of a soft top, a solution making a welcome return to the Prancing Horse range on a front-engined car 54 years after the 1969 365 GTS4.”

The gearbox is based on a dual-clutch oil bath architecture and is derived from the 8-speed gearbox first introduced on the SF90 Stradale.

And the Spider is the perfect car to be seen in as you waft along the shores of Italy’s Lake Como, or cruise the French Riviera.

Most of all, it’s a car that will well and truly stir the senses.

A Ferrari spokesperson adds:

“This timelessly elegant, high-performance car is a contemporary take on the chic, pleasure-seeking Italian lifestyle of the 1950s and 60s.”

The fabric roof of the Roma Spider can be opened in just 13.5 seconds and at speeds up to 37 mph.

You also get a 255 litre boot - which is on a par with the decidedly less glamorous Kia Picanto and which Ferrari says is ‘class leading’.

Of course, seeing as how it’s a Ferrari, it’ll also go like a scalded cat and handle with precision.

There’s an active spoiler at the rear of the car’s upper body for maximum downforce, a sophisticated Ferrari ‘Side Slip Control System (SSC), and the Ferrari Dynamic Enhancer (FDE), which rapidly adjusts the hydraulic brake pressure at all four wheels to give you maximum control.

Pricing is yet to be announced for the Ferrari Roma Spider, but it’s likely to be slightly higher than the regular £170,000 Roma coupe.
