The all-electric new Jeep Avenger has been given its full reveal - and here’s everything you need to know about this rival to the Volvo XC40 Recharge, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the Vauxhall Mokka E.
First thing’s first, the Avenger will debut as a front-wheel drive car, with a full-on 4x4 tipped to follow later. In fact, a rugged ‘Avenger 4x4’ has already been teased in concept form (see below).
For Jeep fans, that’s an important consideration, with the American brand being famed for its prowess on the tough stuff.
And despite the initial Avenger being a 4x2, Jeep says it’ll still be adept on tricky terrain thanks to good ground clearance, approach and departure angles, hill descent control, and the firm’s ‘Selec-Terrain’ system as standard.
At the turn of a dial, the Selec-Terrain will adapt the Avenger’s response depending on the conditions under the wheels - with settings including ‘Snow’, ‘Sand/Mud’, ‘Rock’, ‘Sport’ and ‘Tow’.
The Avenger is powered by a 400-volt, 54 kWh battery that provides power of 156 hp and 260 Nm of maximum torque. That’s not going to set the world alight in terms of performance, but it’s still more than what’s on offer with the Vauxhall Mokka Electric.
It also means that you can eke the most amount of range from the battery, with that distance standing at up to 249 miles, which is right up there with the Volvo XC40 Pure Electric.
Meanwhile the Avenger also supports 100 kW ‘Mode 4’ charging which can take the battery from 0-80% full in 24 minutes or put 19 miles into the ‘tank’ in just three minutes. A full replenish of the battery using a typical home wallbox will take around 5.5 hours. Make sure you get the most out of every charge and consult our guide on charging an electric car.
When it comes to how the Avenger looks, you’ve got to say that Jeep has really nailed the brief.
Large 18 inch wheels and short overhangs on the body not only give it some proper road presence, it also means the Avenger offers the best ground clearance in the category - at 200 mm - as well as outstanding approach (20°), breakover (20°) and departure (32°) angles.
Jeep tells us that these attributes are ‘essential for off-road driving’ but also ‘useful in city life, for example when driving up a steep parking ramp’.
So, the Avenger should be absolutely bullet-proof on the school run. There’s also skid plates, 360 degree cladding, and encased headlights to make it scuff-proof, too.
The interior is described as ‘functional and spacious’, but it doesn’t look sparse. It’s also being billed as among the roomiest in the class.
There’s ambient lighting and a centrally-located 10.25 inch touch screen, the option of leather seats and a sunroof if you want one.
A 380 litre boot is larger than you get with the Vauxhall Mokka Electric or the Hyundai Kona Electric.
Meanwhile the Avenger also boasts ‘Level 2’ autonomous driving capabilities, which automatically adjusts speed and trajectory, and makes use of adaptive cruise control and lane centering tech.
Christian Meunier, Jeep brand CEO, says:
“The new Jeep Avenger represents a key milestone for the brand as it is the first of a portfolio of all-new Jeep BEVs to be introduced in Europe.
“It offers Jeep brand capability that is right sized for the European market and at the Paris Motor Show, we are showcasing why it is a great all-electric Jeep brand alternative to current players in the B-SUV segment.”
Order books for the Avenger open in January with prices expected to start at around £30,000.
