Still not sold on plug-in hybrid powertrains? Well, worry not, because Mazda has introduced a new mild-hybrid diesel version of its CX-60 SUV.
Up until now, the super-sleek CX-60 has been available as a frugal plug-in hybrid only.
You can read our review of the refined family load-lugger here, as our writer praises it for being both powerful and frugal while also taking the fight to Audi and BMW.
But now there’s a new powertrain available - and who said diesel was dead?
The derv CX-60 is powered by a 3.3 litre ‘e-Skyactiv D’ engine with power of either 200 PS with rear-wheel drive, or as an all-wheel drive 254 PS variant.
Neither of those powertrains can hold a candle to the oomph on offer with the PHEV CX-60, which has power of 327 hp and which can whip along from 0-62mph in 5.8 seconds.
But the good news is that the e-Skyactiv D diesel engine is available across all three trim levels - entry ‘Exclusive-Line’, mid-range ‘Homura’ and top-spec ‘Takumi’.
And the engine is also supported by a 48v mild-hybrid system designed to maximise fuel economy and reduce emissions.
A Mazda spokesperson tells us:
“As you’d expect from a Mazda, the new e-Skyactiv D powered CX-60 delivers an impressive blend of performance and efficiency, alongside the driver focused handling, impressive comfort and high-quality found across the CX-60 range.”
The rear-wheel drive 200 PS engine is only available in the Exclusive-Line trim and returns up to 56.5 mpg with CO2 emissions of 129g/km.
The AWD 254 PS unit is available across all three trim levels and has average fuel consumption of 53.3mpg with CO2 emissions from 137g/km.
Mazda says that its diesel engine has been developed with a reduction in vibration at the forefront of minds, helping to deliver a ‘smooth and quiet tone’ and ‘clean and engaging sound.’
Like its plug-in hybrid sibling, the diesel CX-60 is also a caravanner’s friend, being able to pull a 2,500 kg trailer.
Mazda Motors UK Managing Director, Jeremy Thomson, said:
“While the PHEV will be the biggest selling CX-60 in the UK, the new six-cylinder diesel is a fantastic example of Mazda’s long-standing reputation for engine innovation and it will be a superb choice for many retail customers looking for a high-quality large premium SUV with a clean and efficient diesel engine.”
A 3.0 litre petrol engine is due to join the range at some point soon, too, so we’ll keep you posted when that arrives.
And while the CX-60 doesn’t have the option of 7 seats, the incoming CX-80 does and will be launched next year.
Prices start at £42,990 for the diesel CX-60. The plug-in hybrid CX-60 begins at £45,420 and can be leased from around £497 per month.
