- BYD Atto 2 set for Feb 2025 launch
- Will rival the Vauxhall Frontera, Kia EV3 and MINI Countryman
- Gets 193-mile max range
- ‘Big car’ features in compact package
If you’re in the market for an urban EV that’s built for the cut and thrust of city streets, you’ll want to check out the incoming BYD Atto 2.
The compact hatchback-SUV crossover has made its debut at the Brussels Motor Show and will be available to lease in February 2025.
It’ll sit in BYD’s range between the larger Atto 3 and the smaller Dolphin while also rivalling market heavyweights like the Kia EV3, MINI Countryman Electric and the new Vauxhall Frontera.
At launch, the BYD Atto 2 will be handed a 45.1 kWh battery that unlocks a range of up to 193 miles between charges and decent power of 177 PS - which should be more than enough to keep with your fellow commuters.
A larger battery, and therefore a bigger range between trips to the plug, will follow later in the year.
The battery pack itself is one of BYD’s patented lithium iron phosphate (LFP) ‘Blade’ units, which is integrated into the vehicle chassis and delivers ‘class-leading safety, durability and performance’, according to the Chinese manufacturer.
And don’t forget that BYD supplies batteries to a host of other manufacturers, including Tesla, Ford and Toyota, so knows what it’s doing on that front.
BYD reckons the Atto 2’s ‘compact dimensions and agile manoeuvrability’ makes it the ‘perfect urban EV for those who don’t want to compromise on a premium finish and big-car features’.
The Atto 2 is certainly easy on the eye, coming with full LED headlights, slim daytime-running lights and distinctive lower cladding to disguise the car’s raised ride height.
The cabin features padded surfaces throughout, lots of storage areas, a diamond-effect gear selector, and proper physical knobs for functions like the audio volume and windscreen demister.
The Atto 2 will also be available with a panoramic glass roof and a generous boot that measures 400 litres, which is decent for the class.
BYD Executive Vice President Stella Li said: “We’re excited to start 2025 with another important model for our plans in Europe. The B-segment SUV class is incredibly popular here, and with the Atto 2, we have an agile and versatile offering that will appeal to that large potential customer base. It takes all of BYD’s strengths in batteries, electric motors and Cell-to-Body construction and combines them in a compact package that brings new intelligent technologies to the urban SUV class.”
Full specs and prices will be revealed in the coming days.
