- Bentley reveals details of its first EV
- Will be a ‘Luxury Urban SUV’
- Set to arrive in 2026
- No word yet on looks or range
Bentley’s first fully-electric vehicle will be a ‘Luxury Urban SUV’ - and it’ll be wafting towards UK roads by 2026, the British manufacturer has confirmed.
There are already plug-in hybrid Bentleys, in the form of the Continental GT, Continental GTC, Flying Spur and Bentayga.
The Cheshire-based firm is aiming for its entire range to be BEVs (battery electric vehicles) by 2026.
The first step on that road to full electrification will be an as-yet-unnamed SUV which will be designed and developed in Crewe at Bentley’s planned ‘Dream Factory’ facility.
A company spokesperson revealed this week: “Bentley has also confirmed that its first fully electric car to be revealed in 2026 promises to create an entirely new segment, the world’s first true Luxury Urban SUV. This model, designed, developed and to be produced at its headquarters in Crewe, will be the first of a new PHEV or BEV model to be launched every year over the next decade as Bentley’s product and investment offensive continues at pace with an ambition to be building only fully electric cars from 2035.”
Bentley is a major subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group. And while details haven’t been confirmed, the new BEV SUV is expected to ride on VW’s PPE (Premium Platform Electric) electric platform, which is shared with cars like the Audi Q6 e-tron and the Porsche Macan EV.
That’s potentially very good news indeed, as the Q6 e-tron is capable of travelling up to 392 miles between charges, courtesy of a large 100 kWh battery, while the rapid Porsche Macan Electric can muster power of 639 PS with the same 100 kWh unit.
Dr. Frank-Steffen Walliser, Chairman and CEO of Bentley Motors, said: “Four years almost to the day that Bentley initially outlined its Beyond100 strategy, we adapt to today’s economic, market and legislative environment to initiate a major transformative phase for tomorrow.”
We’ve no idea what Bentlye’s Luxury Urban SUV might look like, but the silhouette teased suggests a svelte, coupe-SUV which could stand apart from the boxier Bentayga.
We’ll bring your more details as they arrive.
