Alfa Romeo Junior will arrive in the UK this month!

Take a look at one of the best-looking new crossovers on the market - the stunning Alfa Romeo Junior.

It’s being billed as the first fully electric Alfa Romeo - though the Italian first has also promised that a petrol mild-hybrid version will be available further down the line.

And when order books open later in June, the Alfa Romeo Junior ‘Elettrica’ will offer power of up to 240 hp as well a maximum range of 250 miles. It's priced from £33,895 to buy outright.

Offering stiff opposition to cars like the Jeep Avenger, Smart #1 and the new Kia EV3, Alfa Romeo says the Junior is, ‘sporty at heart, compact in size and Italian at first sight’.

First thing’s first, the name ‘Junior’ needs something of an explanation. This was a car that was originally called the ‘Milano’. But, having been told not to use that name by the Italian government, the Junior was born in ‘the spirit of promoting mutual understanding’, according to Alfa.

Whatever it’s called, the Junior is an SUV-hatchback cross that looks good from all angles. It should also be a proper driver’s car, with Alfa Romeo telling us: “Building on the lowest weight in the segment and optimal mass distribution, Junior enters the world of electric cars like a true Alfa Romeo with best-in-class road holding.”

There are three trim levels to go at, all of which make use of a 54 kWh battery. Crucially, all models get a heat pump fitted as standard which helps you make the most out of the car’s electric range.

The entry-level Junior Elettrica gets power of 156 hp as well as 18-inch alloys, LED lights front and rear, rear parking sensors, ambient lighting, a 10.25-inch infotainment screen, and safety tech like adaptive cruise control, active lane assist, and automatic emergency braking.

The Junior Speciale Elettrica adds a sports styling kit, dark-tinted rear windows, unique alloys, a driver’s seat with massage function, leather steering wheel, sports pedals and kick plates, a hands-free tailgate, and a 180-degree rear camera.

Meanwhile the range-topping Junior Elettrica Veloce model is all about sporting performance. There’s power of 240 hp, lowered suspension, 20-inch alloys, a Torsen differential for optimum grip, and sports brake calipers. Inside the cabin of the Veloce model, you’re also treated to swathes of black and red leather and suede.

Whichever trim you choose to lease, the Alfa Romeo Junior comes with a decent 400-litre boot, which falls short of the luggage space available in the Kia EV3 but which should be ample for most.

Charging at home at 11 kW will see the Junior Elettrica recharged fully in around 5 hours and 45 minutes. The Junior also supports public charging at up to 100 kW, which means you can take the battery from 20-80% full in 27 minutes.

Ahead of any customer deliveries, the Junior will be embarking on a ‘roadshow’ across the UK. You can check out the dates here.
