Aggressive drivers a ‘serious problem’ for female motorists

A quarter of female drivers say they encounter ‘aggression’ on the roads each and every day, according to a startling new survey.

On June 24th, the world will mark International Women Drivers’ Day, an initiative launched by the Women's World Car of the Year (WWCOTY) organisation.

To coincide with the occasion, Czech online magazine Zena v aute.cz worked with WWCOTY to poll 1,485 female drivers worldwide - including respondents from the UK - in an online questionnaire.

A staggering 25% said they ‘encounter aggressive behaviour’ when behind the wheel every day. A fifth said they’re forced to confront it ‘several times a week’.

Worryingly, 69% respondents think that aggressive behaviour on the roads has been increasing in recent years.

And 78% of women drivers consider aggression on the roads to be a ‘serious problem’.

A WWCOTY spokesperson said: “With this study, the Women's Worldwide Car of the Year aims to publicise women drivers’ perspectives concerning driving behaviour. International Women Drivers' Day, a day that vindicates mobility as an inalienable right that contributes to the freedom, dignity, and personal and professional development of women, is the perfect organisation to highlight this survey.”

The news comes just days after a male driver was sentenced to ten months in prison, suspended for 18 months, chased down a female motorist near Manchester Airport and forced her to stop in the middle of a motorway before jumping onto her car bonnet during a road rage incident.

Aggressive driving (22%) was one of the key ‘fears’ among the female drivers polled. It was followed by accidents (20%), driving in reduced visibility (20%), skidding (13%) and collision with animals (9%).

How can we combat aggressive drivers in the future?

Interestingly, 43% of respondents from the UK said more needed to be done when training learner drivers to teach them about the risks and harmful effects of driving with aggression.
