New entry-level engine option for AC Cobra GT

  • New engine option for AC Cobra GT models
  • Petrol 2.0-litre unit joins existing V8
  • Gets power of 390 bhp
  • AC Cobra GT will set you back at least £235,000

Iconic British sports car manufacturer AC has announced a new entry-level engine option for its meaty Cobra GT.

While neither the Cobra GT Coupe nor the open-top Cobra GT Roadster are available to lease, the introduction of a 2.0-litre powertrain gives us another excuse to gawp at them!

Up until now, the AC Cobra GT - built and assembled right here in the UK - was powered by a 5.0-litre Coyote V8 with at least 450 bhp.

A new 2.0-litre option provides 390 bhp, while a dual-clutch gearbox is also up for grabs.

AC, which has a history dating all the way back to 1901, says it’s an ‘exciting entry point for the sensational family of sports cars’.

It also mirrors what Ford did with the Mustang after its initial UK launch in 2015, when (controversially…) a 2.3-litre mill was offered alongside the traditional V8.

An AC spokesperson tells us: “Retaining the same unique aluminium chassis, carbon fibre bodywork and distinctive interior as the existing cars, the new models will bear all the hallmarks of Britain’s oldest active vehicle manufacture. Ensuring that cars remain faithful to the brand’s heritage, the new engines will remain performance orientated. Working in conjunction with a global leader in hybrid and internal combustion powertrain solutions, AC Cars will develop the engine to suit the characteristics and potential that its GT platform delivers.”

The new unit will run in two different states for tune, depending on the model of car. Inherently lighter than the V8 models, the new cars will also benefit from the introduction of additional weight saving with the use of more carbon fibre for relevant elements of the chassis.

Full specs for each engine are due to be announced later this year. Final prices are also still to be confirmed, but AC says the Cobra G is expected to start from £235,000.

Smooth easy experience. I have leased cars for the past 9 years, this my first time here. From day one the process was simple with communication at every step. My contact was Ian Parrow and he was very efficient in all aspects. The curtesy call as my car had arrived was a first too as no other company has ever reached out to me after. Thank you :)
