Three zones, one camper: The Volkswagen California Concept approach to outdoor living

The stylish California campervan is getting on a bit now, but Volkswagen is ready with an all-new model. While it’s badged as the California Concept, you’re looking at a camper ready for production as the next-generation model.

Making its debut at the Caravan Salon trade fair in Düsseldorf, this new model eschews the existing Volkswagen Transporter platform and moves to the new Multivan chassis, building on the existing line with advanced powertrains, safety assists and infotainment systems.

The next-gen California also introduces plug-in hybrid technology to the camper market. This allows for emission-free urban driving and extended journeys supported by high-capacity lithium-ion batteries.

Larger than its predecessor, the new California will also offer enhanced camping features.

It retains the iconic two-metre pop-up roof, while significant changes in the vehicle's interior include a new sliding door on the kitchen side, which enhances outdoor camping experiences. Unlike previous models, where additional equipment was placed on the passenger side, the new layout allows for functional use of both sides of the vehicle during camping. The vehicle also offers versatile weather protection, with quickly deployable awnings and sun sails.

The California Concept is split into three streamlined zones. The first is on the outside of the vehicle, on the passenger side. It remains the primary entry and exit point, similar to the existing California 6.1, but when camping, a sun sail converts this area into an open-air living space.

Zone 2 is the interior. At the front, there are height-adjustable, rotatable seats ahead of a flexible interior compartment. Lightweight, removable individual seats replace the previous rear bench, offering versatility for both cargo and camping configurations. Storage is found in under-seat drawers and kitchen cupboards, while dimmable and color-adjustable lighting enhances the interior. The pop-up roof features a lightweight aluminium shell, large windows, and high-quality bedding, with USB-C and LED lights integrated for convenience. A multifunctional tablet controls the camper’s functions and also serves as an entertainment screen, which is also controllable via a smartphone app or the vehicle's infotainment system.

An additional sliding door on the driver's side creates the third zone, a new outdoor area. It serves as an extra entry and loading point and opens up a separate cooking and dining area during camping. The kitchen is now accessible from both inside and outside, and features a 230-volt induction hob along with a traditional gas cooker. A removable table light and awning LEDs illuminate the area for evening comfort.

The California Concept, slated for 2024, continues Volkswagen's ongoing commitment to the camper world, which joins the compact Caddy California and the forthcoming all-electric ID Buzz camper. There’s no word on pricing, but the current model starts at more than £60,000, while a top-of-the-range plug-in hybrid Multivan — before any camper conversion — will set you back around £63,000.

And you can lease the current VW California with Select from £812 per month*.
