This is the new Kia EV5 - an electric SUV that bears all the hallmarks of Kia’s flagship EV9, but in a much more compact package.
The EV5 has been unveiled at the Chengdu Motor Show in China, and it’s in the Chinese market where the car will first be made available.
But we’d be surprised if it doesn’t make its way to the UK eventually, and it’ll sit just below the more coupe-like EV6 in Kia’s range, while competing with rivals including the Tesla Model Y and the Skoda Enyaq iV.
Kia says the EV5 is pitched at ‘millennial families’ who crave plenty of interior space as well as an eco-friendly powertrain.
There’s bold, boxy exterior styling - just like the EV9 - and a ‘Tiger Face’ front end, while Kia says the EV5 provides ‘new levels of driver enjoyment and user experience’.
When it comes to the cabin, Kia’s interior designers have attempted to create what’s essentially an additional ‘room’ to live in - almost like an extension of the driver’s own home.
There’s even variable mood lighting across the front section of the crash pad as well as the front and rear door trims.
A Kia spokesperson explains: “When activated, the mood lighting synchronises seamlessly with the vehicle’s drive modes, dims in low light conditions, and subtly alerts if the vehicle strays over the speed limit, thus enhancing driver engagement and awareness.”
There’s no official word yet on what power or battery pack the EV5 might get, but Kia has promised full details in October of this year, so watch this space.
In the meantime, the Kia EV6 (below) is always worth a look. You can lease one with Select from £494 per month*.
