The only electric pick-up in the UK — the Maxus T90EV — may soon have a rival, with Vietnamese manufacturer VinFast revealing a Ford Ranger-sized concept at the CES show in Las Vegas, in the form of the 'VF Wild'.
If you’ve not heard of VinFast, you’ll need to know that the company was founded by Vietnam’s richest person, Pham Nhat Vuong.
It builds a series of, by conservative European standards, outlandish vehicles for markets worldwide - and the brand is expected to arrive in the UK later this year.
The 'VF 8' crossover is likely to be the launch vehicle, with a larger 'VF 9' SUV available in some European countries and possibly heading our way, too.
And now VinFast has debuted the head-turning 'VF Wild' pick-up, which could also be on a fast-track to Blighty.
Despite being designed for a US audience, the VF Wild is smaller than the Ford F-150 Lightning or a Tesla Cybertruck. It should go head-to-head with the likes of the UK-bound Fisker Alaska pick-up and any future EV models from the brands we already see on our roads.
Its over-the-top styling hides some practical features, including a ‘midgate’ that allows the bulkhead between the load box and cabin to slide back and forth, expanding the load area into the passenger area for larger loads.
As it’s little more than a concept right now, VinFast isn’t sharing any details about power, battery size or range capability.
However, the firm’s medium-sized VF 8 hatchback-SUV is powered by a pair of electric motors developing 408hp and 620Nm of torque, so it’s not unreasonable to assume that powertrain would be carried over. Energy comes from an 87.7kWh battery pack that, on the VF 8, provides a range of 313 miles.
