Korean brand SsangYong has undergone a rebrand and is starting the new year under the KGM name.
In late 2022, SsangYong was bought by the KG Group after sinking into administration. Since last year, the company has been rolling out a new global identity for the manufacturer, bringing it into line with the global KG Mobility brand.
While most countries will see the cars rebranded as KG Mobility vehicles, in the UK, the SUVs and pick-ups will be branded with the three-letter abbreviation of KGM.
This change marks a new beginning for the South Korean firm, leaving behind its financially troubled past and looking towards the next chapter of mobility, embracing electrification, autonomous driving and AI, and incorporating them into the product line-up.
It may be under new stewardship, but the company won’t leave its heritage behind. The company stretches back to 1954, when it began as Ha Dong-Hwan Motor Company. A few more names followed until it settled on SsangYong in 1986. The new KGM logo will still include the brand’s winged logo, connecting to that history. However, the brand colours will change, with blue and white being swapped out for a black and white design.
Along with the new name will come the new global brand slogan: “Go Different. KGM.” Catchy, isn’t it?
Kevin Griffin, managing director, KGM Motors UK: ”KGM Global has changed its name for the first time in 35 years as it transforms into a brand for the future. This is an exciting period for us all in terms of unveiling a refreshed, modern brand identity alongside the development and launch of impressive products which utilise new technologies. We have embraced the change here in the UK, and we will continue to grow as a proud and respected SUV and pick-up truck brand.”
Under the KGM banner, the road to electrification is accelerating the brand towards the launch of the Torres EVX electric SUV in the coming months before a Torres-based electric pickup follows in the second half of 2024.

This rapid development of electric vehicles has been aided by the Korean firm partnering with BYD. This collaborative move has been pivotal to its next-generation growth strategy and securing continued and sustainable growth.
The firms have previously worked together, with researchers from both companies beginning the joint development of the next-gen hybrid system for a 2025 model based on the Torres. There are also plans to develop plug-in hybrids, with a recent restructuring of its research institute enhancing the capabilities for further development of electric vehicles.
