- Our fist look at the Kia PV5
- Electric van will launch as 'Cargo' variant
- Passenger and Chassis Cab configurations to follow
- Could be major Ford E-Transit Custom rival
Kia has pulled the covers off the PV5 - and we were there to get a first look around this next-gen electric van.
A modular electric van set to challenge the light commercial vehicle (LCV) sector with its adaptable design, advanced technology, and a choice of battery configurations, the PV5 is the first model under the brand’s ‘Platform Beyond Vehicle’ strategy, marking Kia’s entry into the European van market with a strong focus on future-ready commercial transport.
Positioned slightly below a typical mid-sized electric van like the Ford E-Transit Custom, the PV5 will launch with Cargo, Passenger, and Chassis Cab configurations.
Built on Kia’s ‘E-GMP.S’ skateboard platform, it allows for multiple body styles and interior layouts, offering significant versatility. The PV5 Cargo, the first version to arrive, will be available in two lengths and two height variants, with a maximum load capacity of 5.1 cubic metres.
However, payload figures may raise eyebrows. At an unconfirmed kerb weight of 2.65 tonnes, the PV5’s maximum payload will likely stand at around 850kg. While this is higher than the Volkswagen ID Buzz Cargo (607kg), it’s noticeably lower than the Ford E-Transit Custom, which can handle over a tonne.
Kia has designed the van with accessibility in mind. A low cargo bay step height of just 419mm helps ease loading and unloading, achieved by recessing the load floor into the chassis. The High Roof variant enhances usability further by offering a walk-through cabin featuring a retractable passenger seat and sliding partition between the cab and cargo area.
Kia has integrated an optional L-track mounting system to maximise storage flexibility, enabling cargo to be secured with sliding tie-down rings positioned throughout the load area, including along the headlining and partition wall.
Powertrain and Battery Choices
Kia will offer the PV5 with multiple battery configurations, with a 51.5kWh or 71.2kWh NCM (nickel-cobalt-manganese) battery across all variants, with an additional 43.3kWh LFP (lithium-iron-phosphate) option available for the Cargo model, although it's unclear if this model will make it to the UK.
A front-mounted electric motor delivers 120kW (163hp) and 250Nm of torque, which should provide adequate performance for most commercial applications. Kia has prioritised fast charging, with all PV5 models capable of charging from 10% to 80% in 30 minutes, minimising downtime for operators.
Smart Connectivity
The PV5 is equipped with a 12.9-inch infotainment system running Android Automotive OS, enabling businesses to install custom applications and optimise the van’s functionality for specific operational needs. Partnerships with Geotab, Dot42 and Samsung will also allow the PV5 to integrate with fleet management systems.
Fleet operators can also benefit from Kia’s predictive maintenance system, which uses real-time data to monitor vehicle health and minimise unexpected repairs.
Over-the-air updates ensure the software remains up to date, while Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality allows the van to power tools and equipment directly from its main battery.
Functional and Futuristic Design
The PV5’s design began in Kia’s European studios before being finalised in Korea, embodying the brand’s ‘Opposites United’ design philosophy. It blends a futuristic aesthetic with functional durability, featuring integrated lighting and rugged protective cladding.
Kia’s Executive Vice President of Design, Karim Habib, described the approach to Select Van Leasing: “This is a working tool designed from the ground up as an EV. It looks futuristic because it represents the next generation of commercial vehicles.” Practical considerations are evident, such as the three-section front bumper that allows partial replacements, reducing repair costs for minor scrapes.
Kia will also introduce its ‘AddGear’ system in the PV5, enabling the inside of the van to be customised with custom-made accessories. While initial options include practical, if unexciting, options like umbrella holders and coat hooks, the system is expected to expand with powered accessories that allow businesses to modify the van as their needs evolve.
Expanding the PV5 Lineup
Kia has confirmed that additional PV5 variants will follow, broadening its commercial appeal. A Crew model will cater to mixed cargo and passenger transport, while a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV) version will feature a side-entry ramp supporting up to 300kg.
Drop Side, Box Van, and Freezer Box configurations will be introduced by 2026, targeting logistics and food delivery sectors. Excitingly, a Light Camper variant is also in the pipeline.
Looking ahead, Kia plans to expand its commercial EV range with the larger PV7 van, followed by a full-size PV9.
Kia PV5 Availability and Pricing
The PV5 is set to arrive in European markets in the latter half of 2025, with other regions following in 2026. UK specifications and pricing details will be announced later this year, but the van will make its debut at the Commercial Vehicle Show in April.
Kia is targeting a starting price of just €30,000 (approximately £24,800) before taxes, positioning the entry-level PV5 Cargo well below rivals like the Ford E-Transit Custom, which starts at nearly £45,000. It seems unlikely, but if Kia can maintain competitive range, payload, and technology at this price point, the PV5 could be a game-changer for the eLCV sector.
Kia’s seven-year or 100,000-mile warranty found on its road cars will also be in place for the PV5 van, which should reassure businesses of its expected longevity.
With additional variants and a growing focus on electric commercial vehicles, Kia appears poised to seriously impact the van market.
