The Maxus T90 pick-up truck is set to be rolled out with a diesel engine, moving the model away from its electrified roots.
According to reports in Parkers, Maxus will fit the 163hp 2.0-litre diesel engine which currently powers the Deliver 9 van into the previously electric-only T90 pick-up. An eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox will be paired with the engine, and four-wheel drive will also be added — something that isn’t available in the current electric T90.
The diesel variant’s payload capacity will reach 1,050kg, ensuring it is above the all-important 1,000kg mark and making it easy for business customers to reclaim the VAT on vehicles even after a canopy is fitted.
Harris Maxus director of group franchises Mark Barratt indicated that this change was not a move away from the company’s commitment to electric vehicles but a response to customer feedback. Barratt suggested that discussions with dealers and customers had revealed concerns with electric vehicle infrastructure, and that introducing a diesel option was designed to address these primary concerns and support the dealer network.
Barrett also emphasised that the change was not intended to drive sales growth but to support customers who were not ready to switch to electric vehicles. The diesel alternative is aimed at keeping them within the Maxus brand until the time is right for them to make the change and the charging infrastructure develops and improves.
In the UK last year, Maxus registered over 6,000 vans and pickups, of which more than two-thirds were electric vehicles.
