- New BMW M5 Touring estate goes on sale
- Priced from £112,500 and available to lease soon
- Plug-in hybrid powertrain with 727 hp
- Electric range of up to 42 miles
BMW has launched a new Touring version of its M5 - adding an estate to the line-up for only the third time in the M5’s 40-year history.
Back in June, we welcomed the seventh generation BMW M5 Saloon to the leasing party. Now it’s the turn of the bigger-booted Touring estate.
The powertrain across both variants remains a controversial one - it’s a plug-in hybrid with colossal amounts of power at 727 hp but which also makes the M5 heavier than its predecessor.
There’s no arguing with the performance, though.
The M5 Touring’s 4.4-litre V8 engine and 18.6 kWh battery and electric motor combine to produce a gargantuan 1,000 Nm of torque, which is enough to accelerate the estate from 0-62 mph in 3.6 seconds.
That’s only a shade slower than the M5 Saloon, which does the same sprint in 3.5 seconds.
Yet despite the M5’s break-neck launch speeds, you still get a range of up to 42 miles using electricity alone while the powertrain is capable of returning in excess of 140 miles to the gallon with the battery fully charged.
Is all of that good stuff enough to make you forget about the M5’s heft? It just might be.
With up to 1,630 litres of load space, with the rear seats folded, there’s also an abundance of practicality besides all of the performance.
Like the M5 Saloon, the BMW M5 Touring features muscular flared wheel arches, a low-slung stance, and a subtle rear roof spoiler. It’s also longer and wider than the regular BMW 5 Series Touring.
BMW says that a near-50:50 weight distribution and improvements to the car’s rigidity and aerodynamics compared with the old model means that it handles better than ever, too.
There are ‘M’ twin exhaust tailpipes at the back finished in black chrome, the M multifunction, ventilated seats provide a ‘racing car feeling’ while offering long distance comfort, while there’s also an optional panoramic glass sunroof.
Another attractive option will be the electrically-retracting tow bar, with a max trailer load of 2,000 kg.
Standard-issue safety tech includes front collision warning, lane departure warning and an evasion assistant, while active cruise control is optional.
The BMW M5 Touring is priced from £112,500.
As ever, the Audi RS 6 Avant is the Beemer’s biggest rival, with the performance Audi estate enjoying less power at 630 PS but a slightly quicker acceleration time than the M5 Touring.
