If you want one of the most exciting hot hatches on the market today, and one with true rallying pedigree, look no further than the Toyota GR Yaris.
The regular Yaris is a great family car, but it’s no supersport. The GR Yaris, on the other hand, is another beast entirely, and slots into Toyota’s performance line-up alongside the GR Supra coupe and the GR 86.

In case you were wondering, the ‘GR’ name stands for ‘Gazoo Racing’, with Gazoo meaning ‘garage’ in Japanese. The all-wheel-drive GR Yaris has been specifically developed by Toyota’s Gazoo Racing World Rally Team.
What you get is a super lightweight vehicle, supreme handling and grip, and a turbocharged 1.6-litre engine delivering power of 257 bhp and max torque of 360 Nm.
That equates to a 0-62mph time of just 5.5 seconds - much quicker than the Ford Fiesta ST and Honda Civic Type R while also rivalling the larger Volkswagen Golf R.
There are three versions of the GR Yaris to choose from - the regular GR, the ‘Convenience Pack’ version, or the ‘Circuit Pack’ iteration.
The base GR Yaris comes complete with suede sport seats, an 8 inch infotainment system, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning and a reversing camera.
The comfort-oriented Convenience Pack adds goodies like a head-up display, illuminated entry system and an uprated sound system.
Meanwhile the most important thing you need to know about the Circuit Pack is the addition of a 4WD Torsen limited slip differential, allowing you to put down as much power as possible without breaking traction.
Despite all that pace and performance, the GR Yaris will still accommodate two people in the rear while having 174 litres of boot space - just shy of that you’ll find in a MINI hatch.
