The BMW X1 is a compact SUV that has been a fixture of UK garages and driveways for a good few years now, having first been launched in 2009.
Back then it was considered to be little more than a high-riding BMW 1 Series, lacking the presence and poise of other rivals.
But that very much changed in 2022, when a facelift saw the X1 becoming bigger and bolder than ever before - and also saw it posing much more of a threat to rival cars from Audi, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo.
It is, then, every inch a BMW SUV - even if it’s the most compact and affordable car of its type in the German firm’s prestigious range.
BMW says the X1 offers ‘comprehensive versatility and functionality’.
And coming as it does with a host of different engines to choose from, including a plug-in hybrid powertrain, as well as lots of room for rear passengers and a generously-sized boot, it’s hard to argue with that statement.
The most recent version of the X1 is larger, and more aggressive in its looks than ever before, giving lease customers a real taste of the kudos that comes with driving a vehicle wearing that famous German badge.
Yet the X1 is also one of the most affordable vehicles in BMW’s range, and its most wallet-pleasing SUV full stop. There’s plenty to get excited about with an X1 lease.
There are traditional petrol and diesel engines, while the plug-in hybrid powertrains offer a serious level of fuel economy.
There are two petrol engines, the ‘sDrive20i’ with power of 170 hp, and the all-wheel drive, 218 hp ‘xDrive23i’, which will accelerate from 0-62mph in 7.1 seconds.
The entry-level ‘sDrive18d’ will return up to 55 mpg, while the more powerful, all-wheel drive ‘xDrive23d’ is actually slightly more economical.
There are two units to choose from - the range topping, 326 hp ‘xDrive30e’ and the ‘Drive25e’, which has power of 245 hp.
There are three main trim levels ‘Sport’, ‘xLine’ and ‘M Sport’. The good news here is that you can choose a plug-in hybrid engine even with entry-level models.

Just because you want a small SUV doesn’t mean you need to sacrifice luxury and brand image. The BMW X1 brings all the premium appeal of the iconic German manufacturer to a compact size, with a footprint on your driveway no bigger than a hatchback. But the extra space of its SUV body style makes it practical for families, and it’s fun to drive too. Plus there’s a choice of trim levels and the option of petrol, diesel or plug-in hybrid power.
With several trims and engine options to choose from, the monthly lease rates for the BMW X1 vary quite a bit. But whatever your budget, we can help. Select Car Leasing has market-leading links to the automotive industry, which gives you access to some of the country’s most competitive rates and lots of special offers. The X1 promises all the appeal of larger, more expensive BMWs in a compact size. That means a great driving experience, a top-quality interior and, considering its diminutive proportions, impressive practicality. Four adults will have no trouble fitting in, and there’s a big enough boot for their luggage too. Meanwhile, a range of efficient but punchy petrol and diesel engines are available, or for those that want to really cut their fuel use, a plug-in hybrid model can run for more than 54 miles per battery charge on electric power alone.
The X1 was given the maximum five-star score by independent safety organisation Euro NCAP when it was tested in 2022.
The X1 comes with plenty of standard safety features, including automatic emergency braking, which will intervene if you don’t react to an impending collision. When it comes to practicality, BMW has engineered lots of space into the X1’s small size, with an automatic boot lid on all models, a seriously large boot compared to rivals and lots of headroom and legroom in the back seats. Some models let you fold down the front passenger seat as well as the rear seats, which gives you loads of load-lugging capability. That could be very handy for those flat-pack furniture purchases.
There’s a good choice of different models in the X1 range, with petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid power and two or four-wheel drive. When it comes to trim levels, the range starts with the Sport, featuring 17-inch alloy wheels and LED headlights, as well as parking sensors front and rear. Next up is xLine, which has sports seats and 18-inch wheels. M Sport models have a racier vibe, with a bodykit and M Sport Adaptive Suspension for more accomplished handling. If you’re after the X1’s practicality in a more ‘hatchback’ style package, check out the very similar BMW X2 crossover.
I made a number of enquiries into leasing a car and Select came up with the best deal. I dealt with James Bamber who very helpful in dealing with my many questions. They were very easy and straightforward to deal with and would not hesitate to in using them again. Calls and email answered promptly.
The gentleman who was assigned to my lease went above and beyond his duty. I was in a problem due to lack of a vehicle and needing it to travel to an important race (for wife), and he arranged for the vehicle to be delivered in time. Hats off to Jerette Mauthe, I owe you a beer !
First time leasing a car and didn’t know what to expect but couldn’t be happier. I had the pleasure of dealing with Michelle Timmis who was brilliant and so helpful. Michelle explained everything step by step and made the process so simple. Would definitely recommend. Thank you
