If you’re fasting for the holy month of Ramadan, here are some road safety tips that might help you stay safe behind the wheel.
Ramadan began this week and will see Muslims across the world fasting each day between dawn and sunset.
It’s a time for spiritual reflection which runs until the evening of Friday April 21st.
Here at Select Car Leasing we hope all observers experience a ‘Ramadan Mubarak’, or ‘blessed Ramadan’.
And because fasting can have an impact on things like hydration, blood sugar levels, and reaction times, it’s good to be mindful of how your concentration levels might be affected while driving.
Last year the road safety group GEM Motoring Assist encouraged Ramadan observers to ‘make road safety a priority’.
And the organisation also issued the following helpful tips:
- If you are fasting, don’t rush on your road journeys. Be patient, and remember there will be other people on the road in the same situation as you.
- Use public transport or taxis if possible.
- If you drive for a living, you should take care.
- If you feel tired, dizzy or weak, stop to rest.
- Fatigue is a significant risk. Recognise the early symptoms and don't try to fight them.
- Plan your schedule so you don’t have to rush anywhere to be home for food and drink.
- Try not to drive during the night. With only a few hours between sunset and sunrise, you must save the time for a good rest.
- Take more frequent breaks on long distance journeys.
