Next-generation Volkswagen Amarok pickup testing in Oz

The first images of the next-generation Amarok have finally been released by Volkswagen, and the pickup truck is no longer just concept art but a real-world example.

It’s still a long way from hitting the roads though, so Volkswagen's taster has kept the details under wraps with some camouflage.

Amarok Design

The disguise hides plenty for now, but the basic design elements are clearly visible. Despite sharing much with the forthcoming Ford Ranger, the narrow LED headlights, front wings and door panels are unique to the Amarok. The lower grille will differ depending on the model - appearing as either a horizontal design or a bold X-shaped version.

There are parts on the Amarok that are shared with the Ford Ranger but they are well concealed, for the most part. Some shared DNA is more obvious though, as the basic cabin structure such as the windscreen, side windows, rear window and roof will be the same on both models.

Volkswagen does differentiate itself from Ford further with boldly extended wheel arches and an ‘AMAROK’ stamped tailgate.

Albert Kirzinger, Head of Design at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, explains:

"For the new generation we have significantly modified the Amarok’s archetypal design. It is now unambiguously more expressive and once again appreciably more impressive.”

Amarok Cabin

The new Amarok benefits from increased cabin space over the old model, thanks to a longer wheelbase that now measures 3.270mm. The rear of the cabin has a decent amount of space too, able to accommodate three adult passengers sitting in comfort.

There’s a high-quality design throughout the cabin, with a functional digital cockpit and tablet-controlled infotainment system front and centre. For those looking to enhance that premium feel, an exclusive sound system and leather-look surfaces and door panels with distinctive decorative stitching will be available.

The new Amarok promises to be packed with a new level of safety tech, too. There will be more than 30 driver assist systems, including automatic emergency braking. Many of these additions are brand new to the Amarok.

Volkswagen will produce the Amarok with five trim levels in total, from the entry-level, simply called ‘Amarok’, followed by ‘Life’ and ‘Style’ models. The top of the range will be split across two models, the off-road-focused ‘PanAmericana’ and the road-biased ‘Aventura’. It isn’t confirmed what will be available in the UK, but it’s possible that not all five will make the cut.

Amarok Cargo

The longer wheelbase gives rise to extended payload capacity too, increased to as much as 1.2 tonnes. Towing capacity limits remain the same, at 3.5 tonnes.

The cargo bed will be longer and wider than before, with enough space between the wheel arches to accommodate a euro pallet loaded sideways. Robust lashing points ensure loads can be kept secure, too.

Shorter overhangs front and rear and greater ground clearance will improve off-road capabilities. There is a significant improvement in the wading depth too - the expectation is that it will increase to 800mm.

Amarok Powertrain

The Amarok will be offered with one petrol engine and four diesel engines across global territories, but how that will translate for UK customers is still unclear. The most likely scenario is that there will be a 2.0-litre diesel option in the UK, with 213hp, as well as a more powerful 3.0-litre V6 diesel. Not sure what engine to go for? All models will be offered with four-wheel drive and an automatic gearbox. A manual gearbox option is expected for the 2.0-litre model.

Amarok Availability

Customers keen to lease an Amarok will have to wait a while yet, as the full reveal of the new pickup truck won't be until towards the end of 2022. While a single-cab will make it to some territories, the UK will receive only the double-cab model which is expected to arrive with customers in early 2023.
